I recently read a very intersting book about London called "First Blitz" by Neil Hanson. It is actually about the First of the World Wars, how Germans tried to force Britain to sue for peace by creating panic in London through aerial bombardment, a new thing at that time. How haphazard, albeit scary and bloody, it was at first - and later how close London came to be destroyed in a firestorm as in the autumn of 1918 the Germans developed the ultimate incendiary bomb ... the German High Command order for that raid was rescinded literally at the last minute, as the war was deemed lost anyway.
