Hindsight is great... to get it he'd have had to clatter our own CB's. If he'd come and someone got a flick into an open net he'd get slated also. If the defence simoply headed it away nobody would've said he should've come. He could've come yes, but by where everyone was positioned and the nature of the ball there's no guarantee he'd have got it clean at all.
