We won that’s as good as it gets, shocking performance and very lucky to win, no cohesion in this team, borderline shambolic second half, getting a bit worried about this squad, looks very weak .

Second half we were absolutely shocking. Best player on the pitch was their player Barton who has only turned 19 in last couple of months.
Its very early days but very worried none of these new players are ready.
Morrison the best of them but even he struggled last half an hour against their quick movement and passing. Varane after a decent 15 mins was constantly giving ball away after that. Celar again lightweight and so easy to defend against. Santos I am not sure what he does.
But even some of other experienced players were well off, Anderson started well and then was dreadful. Field was absolutely terrible when he came on, one of the worst games I have seen him play for us.
Let’s hope Dembele is ready to hit ground running because genuinely worried about the new signings so far

It's hard to know where to start after watching that. MC is either one of those managers who gives little away when doing his post match interviews or he isn't the messiah we think he is. I suspect it's the former.
We look miles off being a decent championship team based on that performance. Our keeper kept us in the hat. From watching our lot up close i would say only dunne, walsh and frey looked like they knew what they were doing. Paal and jcs were OK, paal actually started slowly but got better. The fact most of the Cambridge attacks came down his flank was more due to the fact that they were overloading that side and by passed our pedestrian midfield so easily.
Not sure why MC put field on to replace andersen. Any link between frey and the midfield was stopped dead after that sub. I'm not sure what formation we played in the second half. Field was abysmal. Absolutely awful. The fact he had the captains armband made it worse. How a professional footballer can't receive the ball, get a good first touch and turn 180 degrees with it under control is a mystery.
He genuinely had a shocker. Twice he just lashed the ball into the stand cos he cant keep the ball in tight spaces. If he was a trialist you would be saying no thank you mate.
Santos looks like a guy who needs to play for the under 23s for a season but is too old and probably just not good enough for this level at the moment..he looks lightweight and doesnt have the speed or the footwork to be an option as a winger so hes just dunnes back up I would say.
Celar looks like he could be a bizarre signing. I get he's a box player but most of the time a forward in this league will need to give his team an outlet, drop in and link the play and offer an option. This guy is either well off the pace which he looked, overweight which he looks and was definitely struggling with the physicality of English football. It will take him a long time to get to grips with this imo. Hope he comes good but for now our pecking order is frey, dykesamd celar.
Overall we got out of jail and I suspect the manager knows it. Varane will take time, I would get Hayden back asap as we lack someone in the middle to play and talk like a leader. Field isn't this player. Varane might be in a couple of years. Cambridge were far the better team in the second half and that's a huge concern. We were cut open through the middle because we just don't have the legs to get around thr pitch. EJB will never be a starter in this side. Technically very good but he has no stamina and lacks the killer instinct you need at this level. His shooting is poor. I've seen 12 year old with more power in their shot. He's obsessed with side footing the ball when shooting. Just put your foot through
All in all, we got through and are in the second round but MC has a lot of work on his hands and we need still need another body in the midfield I think.

I’ve also read numerous comments about this kid Barton running the show for Cambridge from CMF. Now as much as it is a risk for our transfer policy to bring in nearly every recruit this season so far from foreign fields, which will take them all time to adjust to the rigours of playing in the EFL. Shouldn’t we also be looking at young, outstanding talent from the lower leagues of our very own EFL aswell? Barton being a perfect example, and he’s already proved he can cut it at this level by dominating our very own CMF.
I know our transfer policy is to buy young, nurture and develop them into better players to sell on at the right time for a profit, so surely this kid is one we should be taking a chance on? If only 19, he wouldn’t cost much and like other kids we’ve brought in on frees this Summer (to play at Development level), he is ready to challenge for a first team spot now! We used to do this, we must also scour the lower English leagues for talent aswell.
Anyone else, with thoughts on this?

Why not buy him for £250k / 5yr contract on the proviso that we loan him straight back to Cambridge for two further seasons. They get some cash and he comes back to us for three seasons from 26/27 when he's 21yrs. A much better option than sticking him in our U23s.

But if hes good enough to be a starter now then sign him up before bigger clubs are alerted and gry him in the 1st team squad. He myst have had one hell of a game.
