“We have got to set the highest possible standards for ourselves. We gave away a really sloppy goal against Blackburn. From 4-1 and cruising, we survived a warning shot and we were loose and we have got to recognise that and be better.

“It was a good win going into the break; four goals, four different scorers and more goals for our front two. It was great for Brighty and Ebs [to score] too but we were loose on too many occasions.”

Following the Blackburn game, four QPR players headed away on international duty and Warburton was delighted with how his international R’s got on.

He said: “Jan has gone away and scored; Nahki has gone away and scored; Conor Masterson put in a good performance against a good Italy [U21] side – that was a very tough fixture for him and Ireland, so our players have done well and that is really pleasing.

“The fact they have come back injury free is really pleasing too. Matty Smith didn’t get on for Wales but it is all part of his learning curve and now we all focus on Hull.

“They had a tough result against Huddersfield in their last game, so I am sure they will be ready for this game. We’ve trained well this week, we’re in a good frame of mind and we’ll go there full of belief.

“We’ll respect our opponents and we’ll have to do what we do well, be defensively compact and solid and be confident of recording a positive result.”

Rangers earned their first ever victory at The ‘new’ Den earlier this season and last time out they beat Blackburn for the first time in two decades.

QPR haven’t won at Hull in 30 years and Warburton insists that the history books are nothing to go by.

“That’s the first I’ve heard of it [not winning at Hull in 30 years]! I heard about the Blackburn one because everyone kept telling me.

“It’s all about three points for us. History is irrelevant. We can only control what happens on Saturday, so we have to go there and deliver a performance. We have to go there in the right frame of mind, prepare well and then make sure that we deliver.”

Finally, the boss admitted that he may have a selection headache at the weekend, with his squad set to be back to full strength.

He said: “We have got a tight squad and we’ve had a couple of injuries recently but we have dealt with them. We lost Grant, Angel, Luke Amos and Matty Smith earlier in the season but we dealt with it. They are coming back and now we have some selection issues, which is great.”

Ticket inf

Tickets will be on sale to R’s fans on the day of the match. They will be available to purchase at the pitch-side bar (turnstiles 1-5) using cash only from 1pm.

Turnstiles

Visiting R’s fans will be located in the north-east corner of the Stadium. As a result of the KCOM stadium being relatively modern, there are no obstructions and that results in a good view of the pitch. The visiting supporters’ turnstiles are numbered 22, 23 and 24.

Driving directions

When driving to Hull from London it is advised to take the M1 to Junction 21A then the A46 and exit at the B5380. Next, follow the signs for the A46 Newark and at the Lincoln roundabout take the first exit for the Humber Bridge and once crossed the Humber Bridge take the first left at the lights and the ground should appear on the right-hand side.
Parking

Parking is available at the stadium, with a large car park located right outside the ground, which is available for use by away supports. In addition to this, there is also a park and ride service that comes from the city centre. If you decide to park in residential areas, most areas around the ground have been made residents parking only.

Rail travel

Regular trains run from London Kings Cross to Hull and once you arrive at Hull train station the the ground is an estimated 20-minute walk away.

Pubs and where to eat

Away supporters have their own bar at the KCOM stadium called the Pitch Side. This is located outside the stadium, next to the visiting fans turnstiles. However, they stop serving alcohol 45 minutes before kick-off and this bar also offers cold food and snacks.

In-ground refreshments

In terms of in-ground refreshments, alcohol that includes Carling and Marstons is served in the away end. Food including burgers and holland pies as well as general snacks and drinks are available for away supporters to buy.

QPR’s on-loan Tottenham youngster Luke Amos has recovered from a hamstring problem and been passed fit for Saturday’s game against Hull.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is hoping Amos can get plenty of first-team experience after spending most of last season out with cruciate ligament damage.

But the midfielder’s season on loan in west London has not been plain sailing so far and he was sidelined prior to the international break.

Patient Hull City winger Josh Bowler given no cause for regret in leaving behind QPR


The 20-year-old made his professional debut for the West London side before joining Everton

When Ian Holloway turned to Josh Bowler midway through the second half of QPR’s trip to Norwich City on the final day of the 2016-17 season, he was convinced it marked the start of a dazzling career.

Holloway had seen enough of Bowler climbing up the youth ranks in the preceding 12 months to be certain the winger deserved his debut. A first professional contract had been signed in the February when still aged 17 and those 21 minutes at Carrow Road brought further reward.

QPR hoped that exposure would help Bowler to commit his long-term future but in the summer months that followed he rejected a new contract in favour of joining Everton in a £1.5m deal.

It was a calculated gamble for Bowler. For all he could have stayed at QPR with the promise of regular chances in the Championship, the youngster opted to quicken progress on the books of a Premier League club.

Two and a half years on it remains unclear if Bowler made the right call.

A couple of seasons at Goodison Park brought only half a dozen appearances in the Checkatrade Trophy with the under-21s and a fresh challenge with Hull City is still waiting to be ignited.

Two starts came in the Carabao Cup away to Tranmere and Preston but, like at QPR, his only taste of the Championship has come off the bench.

A first reunion with QPR, the club he first joined as a 14-year-old, provides Bowler with chance to take stock.

Although his decision to spend a season on loan at the KCOM Stadium is yet to be vindicated, there are at least signs that the campaign is moving in the right direction.

Four of the last five games have seen Bowler introduced as a second-half sub and against both Cardiff and Huddersfield he was the man Grant McCann turned to when chasing a victory.

“I think if the fans could see him they’d be surprised by how good he really is,” said McCann last month. “Josh is a very, very good player.”

Bowler’s problem, so far, is that he has found himself behind even better players. Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki have made the wide positions their own, each starting all 11 Championship games this season and scoring four goals apiece. Bowler, meanwhile, has played only 116 minutes.

The 20-year-old will be desperate to add to that tally when his former club arrive at the KCOM Stadium but he maintains patience is a virtue.

“Obviously I’d love to be starting more games with the majority of my appearances coming from the bench so far, but I also fully understand that this club has two of the best wingers in this division,” said Bowler.

“I knew it wouldn’t be easy getting ahead of those two in terms of playing time, but they were two players that I identified that I could learn from before coming here.

“Training with them every day is making me a better player and, as I’m still only young, the fact that I have been getting some minutes in the Championship is a major positive for me and I am always ready whenever I am needed.”

QPR, though, bring with them reminders of what Bowler might have enjoyed had he stayed. Eberechi Eze, a former team-mate, has become one of the Championship’s rising stars in the last 12 months, flourishing on his introduction to senior football.

“I only have happy memories of my time there and a lot of the lads that I played with in the youth team are now doing well at senior level so I’m looking forward to hopefully playing against some of them,” added Bowler.

QPR: Who should Mark Warburton trust to start in between the sticks?

Since stepping into the QPR hotseat back in May, Mark Warburton has had a lot on his plate.


The former Brentford boss had to oversee 14 new signings in the summer, work them into his squad and also coach fresh ideas into his new charges.

He seems to have done okay with his tasks, coaching a 4-2-3-1 formation and a 5-3-2 system into his players this season as they sit 9th, just three points off the top of the Championship table.

However, one issue that doesn’t seem to have found its natural conclusion yet is who Warburton trusts to start in between the sticks.

The 57-year-old named Joe Lumley as his No.1 for the first nine league games of the season, but after a handful of mistakes from the 24-year-old, summer signing Liam Kelly has started the last two games instead.

Who do the writers of Football FanCast think Warburton should trust in the long-term? Let’s take a look…

“In my opinion, the more mistakes a goalkeeper makes, the more unsettled the defence will get.

“In Lumley’s case, he made a dreadful error against Luton in which he passed the ball straight to striker Harry Cornick, leaving his goal wide open for the forward to finish into an empty net.

“Then, against West Brom, the 24-year-old allowed Nathan Ferguson’s long-range strike to dip under his body and squirm in.

“Until Kelly makes a string of similar errors, Warburton should stick with his summer signing and leave Lumley waiting on the sidelines – it’s the only option that would be fair for everyone involved.” Billy Meyers

“QPR’s goalkeeping conundrum is a tricky one. Lumley was making a few too many mistakes while he was number one, but Kelly is still conceding a hefty amount of goals – he has shipped five in two games.

“However, Kelly hasn’t made a costly error yet, and I think that it’s only fair for Warburton to continue giving him chances until he does something that warrants losing the spot.

“QPR’s backline aren’t giving him enough support – they allow over ten shots per game – and that’s where the issues mainly lie. If Lumley comes back in and continues to make the same errors it will surely cost the R’s points, whereas Kelly hasn’t shown a tendency to drop clangers during his stint in goal.” Charles Jones

“Being a goalkeeper is often an unforgiving task, and Lumley will be only too aware of that. Granted, he didn’t help himself with some of those costly mistakes, but he cannot be blamed for all of the 14 goals that the R’s conceded with him between the sticks in the first nine games.
“Kelly, meanwhile, has already shipped five in his first two Championship matches, which is not exactly fantastic despite his lack of obvious errors. It seems harsh from Warburton to remove Lumley from the starting line-up, but that is unfortunately the life of a shot-stopper. He is likely to get another chance at some point this term though, and when it arrives, he must be 100% ready to take it.”
“Warburton does have a difficult dilemma between the sticks, but it is one he needs to come down firm on in order to benefit their season. I imagine there’s nothing worse for a defender than seeing the bloke behind you constantly changing, so that in itself causes a knock-on effect in terms of confidence.
“Whether it is Lumley or Kelly is just as tough a decision as you’ll get. Given he has gone with the latter in recent times, it would be wise to keep him there for stability – that, in turn, will only help their quest for a clean sheet.

“That dire run without keeping the ball out of the net also isn’t entirely the goalkeepers’ fault either – yes Lumley may have cost QPR a game or two – but it should instead raise further question marks about Warburton’s three-at-the-back system and why the opposition are allowed to frequently pepper the goal.” Lewis Blain
