I suppose it was obvious from the moment Gerrard said that it really would be different this time and they would all be up for it, that in fact, it genuinely was going to be the same old inept performances from an England team when it really matters.

Some pretty awful individual performances out there tonight. Very few can come off feeling they have performed at anything like an acceptable level.

Slight over-reaction. Judging conditions by time of day in a country the size of Brazil is naive in the extreme.

Conditions with the heat and humidity more importantly meant after the mistake at the start of the second half, in the worst conditions possible, had to try and break down a Italian team that absolutely excels at defending a lead.

Italians could just sit and park the bus, and make the already tiring England players blow themselves out. They were exhausted physically and mentally at the end of that.

First half we put in one of the better performances we've produced in a tournament in years, looked dangerous and fluid, despite carrying a couple of underperformers. I'm not throwing in the towel just because of one brilliantly worked set-piece and a defensive lapse cost us that game.

If we play as positively in the next two games we'll have a great chance to get out of the group.
