  • Could be bad news for football fans

The Police could now insist they have a massive say in kick off times and also the so called "bubble games" where you have to go official coaches to away games and collect tickets on arrival

West Yorkshire Police has lost its appeal case over the costs of policing matches at Leeds United's Elland Road stadium.

The force was seeking to overturn a previous court ruling that the club was not responsible for paying for policing streets and car parks near the ground.

But the Court of Appeal in London rejected the police's claim.

The decision means that the force will have to repay about £1m to Leeds United for three years worth of policing fees.

The court heard that it cost West Yorkshire police about £350,000 a season to provide policing for Leeds United's home games.

During the appeal hearing, West Yorkshire Police's lawyer argued that the area required no policing whatsoever on non-match-days, with one community support officer patrolling the entire area a few times a day as part of a larger beat. Yet, on match-days, numerous officers were required.

However, the Master of the Rolls Lord Dyson, sitting with Lord Justice Moore-Bick and Lord Justice McCombe, said: "The policing of the extended footprint on match-days is provided in order to maintain law and order and protect life and property in a public place.

"None of the arguments advanced on behalf of West Yorkshire Police persuades me that the law and order services provided by them in the extended footprint are different in principle from the law and order services that they provide in any other public place."

Easiest solution is not to bother. That would ruffle a few of Lord Dyson's feathers. Can't find a copper if you need one most of the time anyway, too busy with their speed cameras.

If people stuck to speed limits which are there for a reason the police could then use their time in a more productive manner.

Well, we are very fortunate in Brighton, that the Green council is introducing a 20 mph limit.

Somewhat ironic, as I just drove past a crowd of onlookers, watching a protester up a tree who is not that pleased that the council is about to cut it down to ease traffic.

How about no police at games at all, we would then see "who really wants to have a row"...

I'm well game for that. The amount of geezers the police have stopped me from knocking out is unreal. Lucky in a way I suppose as I'm so 'ard I would have probably killed a few by now had the police not held me back.

I'd go with this option. We police ourselves where I live and it works wonderfully. We could setup a vigilante type security team with Facto in command and Ted being his right hand man smashing bathroom furniture over away fans heads if they play up?

We would have to relocate though as ted hasn't left northolt since the 80s. But then again why would you need to !
