  • What if...?

...Zamora and Johnson had had an injury free season?

...Cisse and Diakite had picked up where he left off last season?

    ...Nelsen had stayed with us?

...Park and Hoilett had been as good as we all expected?

...Faurlin had been able to rediscover his pre-injury form?

I could go on but I think some of the criticism of the board and our managers is unfair. Unless my memory's going, most of us were excited to have the above players on board and IF they had produced what we all (quite reasonably) expected we wouldn't be heading back to the Championship.

I have been truly shocked by Park's performances and Bosingwa's arrogance so I'll leave them out of this but imagine if we had been able to field the following team on a regular basis from the start of August.

    Cesar
    Onouha Nelsen Hill Fabio
    Hoilett Diakite Faurlin Taarabt
    Zamora Johnson

Subs: Green, Traore, Derry, Granero, SWP, Mackie, Cisse

I'm tempted to put in Samba for Hill but this team is based on who we had in August. If you think back to then we would have expected that team to perform and the four in midfield looked especially good. As it is, three of them have not performed as expected and the players brought into their positions are too slow (Derry), too erratic (SWP) and just too random (Mbia). Granero still looks class in my opinion but he hasn't adapted to the PL yet.

It is clear that we are going down but I think a lot of people have lost perspective. Things looked good back in August and while we all knew we were a centre back light there was no reason to expect the disaster that has ensued. On papers the signings of Park and Bosingwa also looked good but we were wrong there.

I still think we are in far better shape with TF at the helm than with Flavio & Co and I am confident he will have learned lessons from this season - the main one being to create stability and not to panic buy players we cannot afford!

    You R'ssss!!!!!!
First game 20.2.82 - QPR 3 Derby 0. It's been mainly downhill ever since!

Too many "what ifs". You need to be able to cope. That many players not performing cannot be a coincidence and it cannot be bad luck IMHO.

Some good points in there to be fair- there's no doubt that we have massively under performed for one reason or another.

I still think the one reason above all others that we have failed is that Hughes assembled an incredibly unbalanced squad that was exposed after 2 injuries.

Other than the Chelsea and Fulham games, this season has been absolutely horrendous. I doubt the Championship will be much better.

I blame Hughes for not being able to blend a side together that you quite rightly say looked good at 2.59pm, just before the Swansea home game.

Someone else points out that this is not coincedence or bad luck as there is too much under performance, this comes back to Hughes inability to create a team spirit, individual player responsibility & die for the badge mentality! Harry can't be expected to come in half way through and change it from a standing start. Especially as you can guarantee most of January's transfer window was spent moving as many of Hughes under performing players on and the rest of the time weighing up the risk of bringing expensive new players on, coupled with trying to not upset an improving dressing room mentally.

Fernandes done what we have all been asking our owners to do, stand by and trust the manager to buy, train, motivate and pick a winning team. Hughes failed miserably and had it not been for Flavio and his hire and fire antics before, Fernandes would have got Harry in sooner but felt he would be criticised for being another Flavio.

Fernandes biggest mistake was actually replacing Warnock with Hughes in my opinion. I still think we would have stayed up under Warnock and it could have meant Harry coming in for Warnock at the start of this season when he had left Spurs. Even if Warnock had taken us down we would be a year ahead in rebuilding and might be heading back up now rather than heading down.....Hindsight aye...

IF they had had an injury free season, they would've probably scored 10 goals between them like they have their last few seasons..... never been prolific.

Anyway we can say what if about anything..... What if Megan Fox happened to be strolling along in my neck of the woods and just at the moment when walking towards me she thought she might fancy a go on a local bit of rough.... i would've had the time of my life. Alas, she never did.

Its been a frustrating season with so many missed opportunties which would see us up the league had we been more decisive.

                            1) first game of the season against Swansea had Green not thrown one in and had Mackie taking his shot on the line we go in at half time one Nil up. Possibly would have come away with a point instead of a spanking (1 point dropped)
                            2) Spurs away we were superb first half and bar a crazy 5mins we should have taken all the points (3points dropped)
                            3) Albion away we get back into the game from 3 1 down and Bosingwa misses one on the line then ref blows up (1 point dropped)
                            4) Arsenal away had Mbia not been sent off think we may have held on plus had the lino had his glasses on and seen their goal was offside on three phases of play we walk away with a point (1 point dropped)
                            5) Reading home Adel is through one on one and roles ball wrong side of the post (2 points dropped)
                            6) Albion at home we had the Green incident where he threw the ball in again (I know this is debatable amongst the fan base) and we loose by the odd goal (1 point dropped)
                            7) Man City Home Adel goes through one on one and hits Hart (2 points dropped)
                            8) Spurs at home SWP goes through one on one and kicks the ground instead of the ball and falls over could have taken all three point (2 points dropped)
                            8) Norwich Adel misses a pen (2 points dropped)

There are 15 points there which we should have but have given them away and with them we have 32 points and were looking for 1 win and a draw (maybe two wins) from 12 to secure our prem status.

Its been a **** old season when you see the above and realise how different things could have been had we had a little bit of the rub of the green but also in a strange old way it gives me a little bit of hope that although were bottom and up against it we are not as bad as the points tally shows and their is a glimmer of hope. After the Man Utd game we have Sunderland and Villa two games we should be looking to win and arguably we could. Villa in between that period have Arsenal and Man City so we could if we beat Villa be 1point off them.

Its bleak R's fans but cling on stranger things have happened
