QPR, on paper, should not be bottom IMHO. Teams like Swansea have over taken us and look light years ahead of us now. Yet, teams like Norwich, Southampton and other pretty weak teams have done so much better than us....yet we are the ones spending money. So why has it all gone wrong?
Lot's of people are looking for the silver bullet - many blame MH. Some will blame Harry, some will blame the transfers, lots will blame the players, but we can't seem to agree on which players are at fault. Some even blame the owners. So, I think that we have to look at what is different at QPR to all the rest of the teams and this is what I see.
1. No continuity. We have played more players in 2 Premier League seasons than most teams do in 5. I think we must have broken the record for number of players used anywhere in the world. This means no continuity, difficulty creating and maintaining a team ethic and almost certainly different cliques in the dressing room.
2. No stability. Managerial changes, captaincy changes, players in sulks, players not wanting to play, team selection changing drastically from week to week, formation changes, tactics all over the place.
3. Trying to solve the problem by throwing players at it. We have brought in loads of players and many of them are on high wages, much higher than those at the club. This must cause some disharmony - especially when the only reason these players come is for money when we are bottom and play in the smallest ground - why else are they here?
4. You are only as strong as your weakest links. Too many players have failed or not good enough. There is no point spending big on a French striker if we still rely on slow Championshiip players like Hill and Derry. Playing Mackie as lone striker - he hasn't got the quality. Samba may be a good signing, but he is not that fast, so pairng him with a very slow partner is suicide in the Premier League. So we have the wrong mix.
5. Tactics - we have left it too late to try and win games now. Draws were ok for a few games to steady the ship, but wins and go down fighting is what we should have done (easy in hindsight).
My summary is that although the owners have the best intentions and have really tried - the policy of buying our way out of trouble by buying "star players" on high wages and throwing more players at the problem has been our downfall. Maybe we should have invested in the spine of the team, not necessarily big stars, but better than what we had and go from there.
I know we are not down yet, but we are very likely to go and we should not have gone.
Just shows money doesn't buy suiccess if it is not used most wisely.
PS - this is not a "negative" post. Just me offloading where I think it has gone wrong.
