Shaun Derry cannot play in a 442. He really, really cannot. Stop saying that he can.

442, with two out and out strikers (Remy/BZ/Bothroyd) who won't be dropping back and linking play or picking up the deepest opposition CM when out of possession, puts huge demands on the CMs. They have to be box-to-box players. Its their job to break up the other teams attacks, and then break forwards to support the strikers from central positions. We simply can't ask Derry to cover that much ground, he looks way off the pace.

The matches where Derry has looked good have all been when he's sat in front of the defence, with two other CMs pressing ahead of him (usually Mbia + Granero/JJ/Park). This formation requires Derry to stay in a relatively small area of the pitch, in between our CBs and the two midfielders. In this small area, Derry is very good defensively. He also has two options just ahead of him for passes.

In a 442, he has to defend a much larger area of the pitch - the space between the CBs and the strikers. And when we attack, he has just one player alongside him to pass to. He doesn't have the vision or the passing technique to pick out the strikers/wingers accurately.

Seriously, give up on Derry in a 442. If we must play 442 (and we shouldn't), we'll need to go with Mbia + Granero/JJ in the centre.

This is essentially the lineup that got completely overrun by West Ham at home.

Dropping Adel is a no brainier for me, (I'd play Granero behind two strikers with two wingers) as I don't think we could do any worse and it comes down to the same old argument, which is instead of telling what he can do, tell me what he actually did and its quite depressing but we must be the only team, who's so called best player is a 'gifted, creative, free scoring midfielder', that don't create or score, but hey ho. He is currently as much use to the team as the one arm washer upperer from Robins nest.

PS: How in gods earth was the following rant from rockandroll was not worthy of a ban, ill never know, but I guess the mods will say they are even handed......

My original post wasnt a dig at Taraabt, far from it.

I just think we need to change our tactics from being negative and over cautious to going for it and that would mean 4-4-2. In my opinion Adels best just behind a striker and i would liek to see Remy and Bobby up top (if fit obviously). I suppose Adel could play as one of the wingers but is that really where he is at his best, i dont think so. Would be a gamble to leave him out tho i do admit.

Got to say tho some people on here dont half get out of their pram when they dont agree with someones opinion. Very strange indeed.

Yeah i agree mate.

I do rate the guy but just think we need to try something different and if that means leaving him on the bench then so be it . He certanly isnt the reason we are where we are but we are now desperate and no one really has earned the right to demand a starting place in the side, no one.
