Both fantastic defenders but I would say Ashley edges it as hes more of an athlete plus arguably for the last 5 years has been the best left back in the world. Even after all the stick he gets playing for England and some of out shicking exits from cups cant recall him ever having a bag game or tournament

Ashley Cole is the only England player who would have ever got into a World XI at any point during his career. And he'd have been Left Back for most of the past decade, a truly incredible player.
Only other players I reckon you could even make a case for would be Ferdinand c2006, Gerrard at about the same time, or Rooney in 2008 or so. But they're all quite inconsistent, and there's almost always someone you'd take ahead of them.
Now I think about it, Cole might well be the first Englishman since the 60s to make it into a World XI. Shame about the personality, of course.

He is a pr1ck of a bloke and I can't stick him but, that aside, as a player he is top top drawer. By far and away the best left back in the world based on consistant performances over the past decade. You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

Cole is a good player but I think people go OTT with him on the basis England have been so s***, great defensively, if I do have a critiscm I don't think he helped England as an attacking option in the number of world cups he played in. A great player would have made his mark as a complete player in the position they play especially if given three world cups, Gazza did.
