JM hit it on the head when he said the players looked like they hoped they would win rather than expected to win.
This is something I do not understand about the Rs. We never dominate games (consistently) and never seem to look like we actually believe we will win. This has been the case since probably our Premiership days. Even in our promotion season we were unconvincing a lot of the time and fortunate we were in a poor League One.
We have a solid defence and, on paper anyway, one of the best midfields in this division. Even if we aren't sticking our chances away we should be controlling games. This does not happen and isn't a new problem.
At least JM recognises the problem. I for one can't get my head around it. We should be running rings around the teams we have played this season so far, bar maybe Brizzle as to be fair them away is a tough fixture. Some of it may be down to the atmosphere at home games. Has to be said Rs fans do moan a lot! For younger players in particular it must be intimidating when you haven't even got your own fans on side. That is not the whole story though.
Sorry but with our current squad we should be aiming for play offs. As it stands it looks likely we will not score in half our games again which is a disgrace and end up scraping results or losing by the odd goal. This is not all about having a goal poacher although such would help to an extent. It is about engendering a winning mentality. Countless managers have tried and failed.
The closest we ever came to that winning mentality was under LDC and the forward play under him and even then we managed to sometimes let ourselves down with questionable defending and conceding late goals. But we looked dangerous going forward and played some great stuff. All we needed to do at that point was stiffen the defence and we would have been top 6. Instead we have gone backwards despite signing some good players.
Even up front although we don't have an out and out goalscorer we do have some reasonable players. Vine running from deep is capable of terrifying most defences. Not much point playing him as out and out striker as that nullifies his positives but in my view one of the best front players we have had in a long time. Aggey is a good impact sub. Pelican who knows? Not made it in Italy top flight but could do alright. Heidar is technically quite good but needs to toughen up and get stuck in.
We have probably on any given day 8 players out of 11 who would expect to get a starting place in any team in the division. That should enough.
Anyway that in my view is the problem. As for the solution fark knows.
