  • So who's to blame?

We find ourselves knee deep in s h1t in the bottom 3 of the prem, we have a lorry load of bang average players earning unbelievable money on long contracts and with absolutely no sell on value at all.

    Who is to blame?

    Hughes?

    TF?

    Beard?

It is such a shame because we could of built superb foundations for our club if we had gone with a strict budget, a wage ceiling etc. I know it is easy in hindsight and no i wasnt complaining when we were signing players like Granero but come on how the hell did Hughes get the nod to sign players like Bosingwa (65,000 a week) and 2 keepers earning around 130,000 between them?

    Someone is culpable

It is a combination of factors that have put us in this mess. We were not prepared for promotion as Neil Warnock put together a team to get us promoted however the team did not have a lot of talent but the players each knew their roles. The team did not have what it takes to compete in the ELP. We did not have a thriving academy for youngsters but this is now been rectified.

Flavio and Bernie did not provide Warnock with the funds to bring players in during the summer of 2011 so when the new ownership came in Warnock panicked bought bringing in players who were passed their sell by dates or fringed players not go enough for Sunderland and Aston Villa.

Then the worse of all decisions was made TF and co bring Hughes in and give him an open check book to bring players in and organise our academy and scouting. TF has been taken for a ride and you wonder how people like him have become rich when they can be so naive. I am not slagging TF off as I like the bloke and feel for him. We all know what Hughes has done and it has left us in a mess. Bringing in injury prone players, average players and did not fix the weaknesses in the squad. Only time will tell what will be the future of our club and it may not be pleasant.

Some fans really make me laugh, how do you think our little old club with its 18,000 capacity, poor training facilities etc attracted Champions league winners and highly sort after players such as Mbia, Granero, Holliet etc.

The same fans who wanted Fernandes to open his cheque book are now saying he was naive, stupid etc. Anyone with any sense knew we were paying high wages, maybe not at the level we appear to be paying Bosingwa but high nevertheless.

Whose fault, well sure Rigg and Hughes selected the players and by the sound of it the whole agent thing was connected so wouldn't look to far past them and their agent. Fernandes naive yes but he did it for the right reasons and will stick with us so let's get behind the team and see what happens.

Ricky everyone knew we had to spend and bring in quality but no-one was urging Fernandes and Hughes to bring in loads of players at the tail end of their careers and stick them all on massive money. No-one.

I guess we were all very optimistic at the start of the season as we had brought in lots of players with good reputations and the vibes coming from the camp were that we were on the verge of something great but lets be honest what sort of desire and hunger do you really believe people like Bosingwa and Zamora really have? Do you honestly think that it hurts them when they dont play? Really?

Dave, you misunderstand I am of the same opinion as you and said so from the start, but many on here that are now blaming Fernandes were wetting their pants when we signed those players.

For me I think the blame lies with Mike Rigg. He would of been the man to highlight players available.

I think Hughes had very much a Brian clough/ Peter Taylor relationship where Rigg would tell him what players to sign.

Everyone on here me included was quite excited about Rigg joining but the reality was he was a huge failure.
I played sunday league football today.

Clearly I was the best player on the pitch.

I scored 5 and made 7 last ditch tackles.

We lost 5-0 but the rest of my team were sh it!

We bought bad generally, that's all.
If we have billionaire backers prepared to fund big spending, then great. We've been unfortunate that we have only attracted mercenaries, only interested in screwing loads of money out of our owners, but that doesn't necessarilly mean we adopt a transfer policy on a par with bleedin' bentfart's.
A knee-jerk reaction of going from one extreme to the other, will not work in my opinion.
What's needed, whilst we still have a board as loaded as they currently are, is a transfer policy that fuses the here, with the now, and the future to boot.
Thing is, the last 3 transfer windows were the most exciting I have ever witnessed in nearly 40 years of support.
The players we brought in, have almost to a man, underperformed, and underperformed to a standard many of us have never seen before.
Lessons can, and I've no doubt have been, learned.
That they had to be so painfully hard to learn, is a real shame for the fans, the board, everyone connected to our great club, but maybe, just maybe, we will emerge better, stronger, smarter, when we finally awake from this nightmare.
                I believe we will.

I'm sorry but I don't think that really stacks up. As has already been said our squad was hopelessly unprepared for the Prem. We were desperate for Prem quality. We aren't going to attract Theo Wallcot. It was only ever going to be bad boys, old boys, injured boys etc who were likely to come - unless we went the other way of buying promising young players - but they would not have been prem players because they are off the scale financially. So you would have been looking at young championship players, some of whom might have made the step up but many more would have floundered. Then the very same people criticising Fernandes and co would have been the first to say "he was so naive to think a player with two seasons in the Championship could spearhead our attack" etc.

Well said. But Fernandes is still in a learning process.

the owners were like kids in xmas party bying toys after toys without thinking. If I were them I would stick with my promotion squad and warnock. and add maximum 4 players from lower english leagues for cheap , quality and hunger to play for the shirt.

Hughes bought badly. Not intentionally but he bought badly, so Hughes is to blame. The board trusted their manager and left him to build what he thought and they believed was the best squad he could. Hind sight is a wonderful thing.

                          No.
Spending money is OK. Trick is getting value for your money. Not that hard a trick, and can be done.
We need not become the Brentford of the premiership to learn from our recent past.

The club took a big gamble signing these players and so far it has back fired. The club built up people's expectations on the signings and it has gone wrong. I still cannot understand why Hughes brought in all these midfielders whilst leaving us short at the back and upfront.

I like TF but he said Hughes would have stayed in charge if Harry was not available. Would he had let Hughes p**ed more money up the wall in January?
