He was useless at holding the midfield at West Brom. Did nothing to protect the defence in the 1st half. I guess the best we can say about that is he couldn't play much worse than that .

He IS a holding midfielder, he always has been. It was injuries at Marseille that prompted them to play him in defence, prior to that he was in midfield - until he lost his place.
