He was always a bad fit for the club, look at when Hughes has down well, resources were at a minimum and he got the best out of his players. Given wealth his hubris took over and his transfer dealings were utterly appalling, £17m for Roque Santa Cruz anyone? Personally I rated at him at Blackburn and when he was appointed thought was a step up from Warnock but I always thought he was the wrong man for the club. I believe Fernandes rushed Hughes in because he was concerned whether the marquee names he envisaged would want to play for a gruff old Yorkshireman with a massive nose and opinion to match.

Considering the £3m a year contract he is (allegedly) on its no wonder he hasn't been sacked ... but then if he hadn't been I think Fernandes would have fired him by now. It can be no surprise to see Tony reticent to sack Hughes but the longer he holds on, the more he looks like a problem gambler, throwing good money after bad in the vain hope it will work out for him the next time.
