Why hasn't it happened under Hughes?

I'm genuinely perplexed as to why we have amassed so few points this season. Mark Hughes has a goodish record with his previous clubs, and has surrounded himself with highly acclaimed back room staff. In the main he has bought reasonably well if a little on the aged/injury-prone side and on paper his squad should be achieving more than they have heretofore.

The chairman has provided money and support and is enthusiastic about the club and it's prospects. All the ingredients for success are there. His tactics and team selection have been criticised heavily but quality players should be able to perform despite that. They haven't, and don't look as though they will anytime soon.

Unless there is war in the dressing room (but Barton's gone I hear you say) I can't see how a change of manager is going to fix this in a hurry. Will we survive this nightmare ?

Defensively, he could have done a better job in the transfer market but didn't. Most fans knew what was needed but Hughes didn't. I wanted to see Bosingwa and Fabio battle it out for the RB slot, and Traore and AN Other for the LB slot. I also wanted a commanding CB brought in but that never happened.

In attack, we simply haven't scored enough goals, and this is as a result of not having enough forwards, and the ones we have, have got terrible fitness records. We are down to just two recognised strikers now. Most people were bemused we got shot of DJ and HH. How we would love to have those two right now!

Our defence has been playing better, but I feel it's our inability to score goals that will ultimately cost us our place in the league. The most alarming thing about this is Hughes was a top class striker in his day yet he can't see the weaknesses in our attack. This reason alone tells me he's not really up to the job.

A very good question. The answer imo is a combination of factors.. I'm not sure mh can get the best out of players..I also think a lot of players are average premier league players. Defence has been shambolic. The midfield hasn't had that cutting edge. Fitness levels have been poor and concentration levels have been horrific...

Some managers just don't cut it at certain clubs. His transfers this summer were extremely unbalanced.

i thinks its largely because of bad hughes buys and lack of a real game plan.....also are the likes of mbia,cisse,grannero etc as good as we think??

Good Question. What's gone wrong, in no particular order.
1) Not addressing the CB issue- HUGE MISTAKE
2) Desperately poor transfers IMO- resulting in an unbalanced squad
3) No natural/inspirational leader to play week in week out
4) Too many players adapting to a new league and a new system
5) Out of form players- so many to list
6) Some very very bad luck
7) We have been punished literally on every occasion we have made a mistake
8) Too many players hiding, not looking for the ball or looking to take the game by the scruff of the neck
9) Not taking chances
10) Not enough hungry players- majority of ours have achieved great things in the game, we need players at the other end IMO.
11) Finally, and for me the biggest- In the 8 games I've seen us this season, barring Spurs first half- we have not imposed ourselves on the game once. Always letting the opposition settle and play to their strengths as opposed to making them worry about ours. Which is criminal when you consider how strong our squad is and how much better we are going forward than defending.

i dont think our squad is 'that strong'.....two alledged decent costly keepers.....mish mash injury prone defenders....unbalanced midfield...non goalscoring injury prones 'strikers'!!

Got to agree with that. As much as I love Hogan's attitude he was a waste of a place in the 25 I'm afraid.

Hogan shouldn't even be playing championship IMO. Think we've had rotten luck, some awful decisions, by refs and Hughes himself. Been let down massively by Cisse, has become a lazy player over night! No settled 11 each week through injuries though I think is biggest problem. A LB, CB and a nippy striker who can finish and we will be top

We need two strikers, one to replace AJ and another to take Ephraim's place in the squad. One place could go to DJ. We also need a LB to take Dyer's place in the squad to give competition to Traore. These changes will then give us a balanced squad of 9-9-4. Then we start looking at centre back. Do we replace any of them or stick with what we have?

For me, the squad balance is all wrong and why we are where we are. The options are limited and why we haven't been able to make good in-game changes.
