  • Afraid I'm firmly in the 'Hughes out' camp

It's November now and four points from ten matches is a quite embarrassing record. Most worryingly, we don't seem to be improving - in fact we're getting worse. I just don't have any confidence that Hughes is going to turn it around. For me, he is an extremely uninspiring figure - negative, uninteresting and uncharismatic. I can't imagine the players feeling particularly motivated by his pre-match and half-time team talks. Yesterday, I felt that our performance was extremely lethargic (particularly in the first half) and, although we improved after the break, for much of the match I was wondering whether our players even interested in what was going on. I don't know about other people, but I've got a feeling that he may have 'lost the dressing room'.

I know much has been written about our defending, but I'm going to moan about it a bit more. What summed it up was that moment in the first half when a Reading throw-in sliced open our defence, almost leading to a goalscoring opportunity. We are not even doing the 'basics' right. Anton Ferdinand's positional sense is absolutely abysmal and at several points he was standing miles and miles behind Nelsen. Bosingwa offered absolutely nothing. Reading must have had at least five free headers over the course of that match - I dread to think of what Stoke will do to us next week with the amount of high balls they put into the box and their aerial presence up front. Seriously, what on earth is going on in the training sessions? Clarke Carlisle and Danny ****tu in League One genuinely looked far more solid and organised than the current lot. It is just pathetic, it really is - and I hold the coaching staff responsible.

What also struck me was our lack of shape. People seemed to be charging around aimlessly. I only realised Mackie was supposed to be playing a central attacking role about 30 minutes in, since he was running around all over the place. Reading, on the other hand, looked fairly well organised despite their players lacking Premiership quality.

Hughes has had long enough. I wasn't overly impressed with him last season - he only just kept us up despite spending large amounts in the January transfer window - and we look even worse this season. We also have an absolutely appalling disciplinary record and it wouldn't surprise me if we get yet another man sent off at Stoke next week with their hostile crowd influencing the referee. I do understand Fernandes' reluctance to sack him - yes it's true that 'stability' is something we should be aiming for in the long term - but sometimes changes are needed and this guy seems to be absolutely clueless. Terrible results, bizarre (and negative) tactical decisions, hopeless defending, bad signings, the obsession with SWP (although he was dropped yesterday) - all these factors mean that he has to go.

I think the Hughes out camp is getting bigger. I am starting to head down there myself. Can't see us keeping a clean sheet against Stoke. In fact I can't see us causing them too much trouble.

TF will give him until XMAS.

I've defended Hughes when calmly thinking about our situation but I left the ground yesterday feeling we'd lost . I just get the impression the boys don't want to play for him as if they were playing for their boss they'd bust a gut but they don't and its not a one off . If this is the case then he simply must go . Perhaps the players don't have a spokesman who can view their opinions and I think Hughes probably talks such a good game when he's talking with tf that maybe that's why he's keeping the faith with him for so long . Obviously this is just my opinion and is speculation but something definatly isn't right deep within the playing side of things . Please don't leave it too late tony or we might be too far adrift . They are such a talented group of players that I just can't fathem why he can't buy a win . Looks like the players are voting with their performances and that can't be ignored for much longer. If I was Hughes I would have been spitting feathers in the interview but he wasn't , in fact he didn't seem remotely surprised we didn't win

Before yesterday, I'd have given Hughes six games, three home, three away, and expected to get 9-11 points. The Villa game I think will be the deciding factor, and if we haven't gained a significant number of points by then, he'll be gone. The new manager will need a few games to assess the squad ready for the January window.

I'm sure TF has a back up plan in the event Hughes has to go. Perhaps Steve Gallen taking over temporarily, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's already looking at possibilities for the job.

But then, it's not just about the appalling record this season. It's last season's as well which wasn't very good. Ok, we stayed up, just, but Hughes must have one of the worst records in the history of our club.
Supporting QPR isn't just about a football team. It's about roots and identity.

As I've said on other threads stability in TF's eyes may be achieved over a two to three year period and may include relegation. TF is building a solid base for the club to go forward, look at the investment in non playing staff and the restructuring of the club. In F1 Tony has seen improvement over a three year period and believes his Caterham team are progressing albeit slowly.

TF know that success takes time and stability in personnel is part of that. Changing the manager now wont necessary improve things long term. Yes we may stay up under Hughes and maybe Harry or someone similar might also keep us up. But what for next season? More backroom changes, more new players and less stability. It took SAF, Wenger, Moyes etc etc more than 18 months to begin to get to where they wanted. Bringing a new manager in now may give us a quick fix but having a revolving door policy like we had under Flabio is not the way forward.
22nd February away v Charlton is the 40th Anniversary of my support of QPR and my first game. Away v Chelsea 3-3 23rd Feb 1974. 40 years of pure magic!!

            The reality check kicks in.

I'm afraid the writing has been on the wall for a very long time.

Not saying that is the best thing to do - but it is what I think will happen.
