  • Owen Coyle

It seems as people are already talking about sacking Magilton or are saying that he has got things tactically wrong or the line up wrong I thought I'd point out some key FACTS.

Owen Coyle took over as Burnley boss on November 22nd 2007. Burnley were 11th and were averaging 1.4 points per game and were 5 points off the play offs. By the end of the season they finished 13th and under his reign they averaged 1.32 points a match and finished 8 points off the play off. The following season they lost their opening match 4-1 and then lost 3-0 and followed this up with two nil-nil draws. In other words just 2 points from their opening 4 matches last season.

Did Burnley sack him? Did his performances as a manager warrant keeping hold of him at that point? They answer is no to both questions. He took over a team and their results got worse. He started a new season with lots of new players that he brought in and some of them subsequently failed (Berisha, Van Der Schaaf and Penny) but still he was backed by the Burnley board and the Burnley fans because they were both patient and knew things take time.

Coyle of course now is a Premiership boss and Burnley are a Premiership team. But are the likes of Robbie Blake, Steven Thompson, Jay Rodriquez, Stephen Jordan, Michael Duff and Brian Jensen better than say Routledge, Gorkks, Connolly, Buzsaky, Taraabt, Vine and Cerny? They had unity something that we haven't had since our promotion season. A board backs the manager both in the transfer market and on the pitch and has patience. The board shouldn't get trigger happy and expect the next boss to pick up the pieces.

We have players at the club who were signed under Holloway who was in charge what 6 or is it 7 managers ago? How many or Moyes, Wenger or Ferguson's squad were at their clubs before they were appointed manager? Everytime a manager is sacked the next one comes in with players that he doesn't want or won't suit his style of play. If Magilton is fired does the next one really want Faurlin or Pellicori? If not can he bring in "his" players? How much time will a new man get? In 18 months Burnley went from a mid table half decent Championship side to a team who take on Manchester United tonight followed by Everton, Chelsea and Liverpool. Under the same manager with his players and playing his style of football. In 18 months that could be us. Arguably if we had stuck with Dowie that could have been us instead of them or have been in a stronger position now.

I can't think of an example when a team has sacked their manager and gone on to get promoted if you can then please show me.

So please please please both the board and you the fans be patient.

    My thoughts exactly

We can't keep sacking managers we need stability and unity which we cant get if we sack managers every 6 months

I think we have a good squad, but Magilton is not utilising it well!

Why play players out of position or leave quality players on the bench?

Sunderland sacked a manager and keane took over and went up
Forgot about Keane and true about the other examples. But thats 4 examples compared with endless examples of managers being fired mid season and failing to go up or win anything.

The same with Gary Johnson when he took over Bristol after being at Yeovil. I believe they lost there first seven games. Patience is a virtue.

              Welcome to the board.

              Another fine example.

Don't think it Jim (or Dowie or Sousa for that matter) we need to worry about ...I'd be looking at the Director of Football who seems to have assembled a squad with little striking options that is top heavy with midfielders

Well done Owen Coyle and well done Burnley for beating Manchester United. This time last season 1 pt from 3 matches and have now beaten the Champions of England in the Premiership.

Sirpie, I made a similar point about Owen Coyle during the time when there was so much speculation about who our new Manager would be. I also added that if Coyle had been mooted as OUR new Manager back in 2007, many message-board warriors would have been coating him as some "unknown Jock-wtf does HE know, bla bla bla". They would also have been having a right go at the club for even considering him.

I agree with your sentiments entirely.

                          Sirpie, I agree with you.

Some other clubs have sacked a manager and gone up, Palace did it possibly twice, but at least once with Dowie who, as I said yesterday, should not have been sacked, and QPR went backwards after doing so.

I know it is early days yet. and I was thinking that we will have a better idea about KM after a few more games.

QPR's away form, so far, is better than last season on goals conceded.
                          08/09 - Sheff U 0-3 and Bristol City 1-1
                          09/10 - Plymouth 1-1 Bristol City 0-1.

If Helgusson and Vine did not miss sitters against Blackpool we would have had the same start as last season.

Hopefully JM will soon work out his best available starting 11 (which I think should include Gorkks & Connolly as centre halves and Buzsaky in a central attacking midfield). role.
