Why do you think Hughes did not address the defence issue in the summer?

Question I keep asking myself after even game now.

It was the most pressing issue after last season where we were conceding sloppy goals every game.

Any decent team always sorts out their defence first. You keep clean sheets, you have always got a chance in games.

We bought a load of midfielders rather than bringing in 2 top centre halves that were going to play every week.

Hughes has just done things in a very backward manner.

I know exactly what you're saying..................... What frustrates me even more was that we went to Tottenham and agreed a sum of £ 9 m approx for Dawson ... Ok dawson chose not to join us or we couldn't agree terms .......BUT rather than move on to other CB targets we went and signed more defensive type midfielders IN THE HOPE that this would do the job !!

If he needed the likes of Dawson 6 weeks ago then surely the board and MH must have realised we would need AN Other 'Dawson type player ' !!!

Honestly tou couldn't make it up !! Only at Rangers it seems !!

Are MF's easier to get than CB's on the cheap? It seems the whole exercise was to get 'quality' for nothing regardless of simple things like age and injury worries. Even any bottom team you see on MOTD, get the ball, pass and go forward, they look positive. We seem to look clueless, what are they doing in training?

I think Mbia and Granero came available and he thought they were too good to turn down for the money.somehow he forgot all about the defence. No doubt that was a mistake..

Well he must have thought that Anton could play and he can't be held responsible for his make silly mistakes, he obviously rates Ned and I think would play him at CB ideally... he brought in Nelsen, and gave the poty Clint a new contract, and on top of that tried to sign Dawson, so if we go by that he then signed Fabio, Bosingwa to go with Traore and it seems Dyer. So he didn't ignore the defence, but players are playing out of position.

He probably thought the midfield needed the most work, and so he left the defence till last.....but it was too late. Oh well he can sort it out in January. We'd be in the same position anyway if it had been the other way around. Solid defence but a not very effective attack meaning less goals conceded but also less goals scored. This midfield we have now is very good for the future though, I'd expect Hughes to go in for a couple new centre backs in January, and maybe that Zouma kid who looks a real good prospect.

Everyone & their dog knew cb was a vital position that needed filling hence a £9m bid for Dawson.

Also why start the season with just 3 strikers, 2 of which are notorious crocks & the other doesn't score regularly.

I take my comment back, looking again he clearly did address the defence.

I thought he didn't at first but then you have to take a look at our signings we made 12 lol.
Same thing with people going on about hill playing LB and traore on bench . Traore has had one training session his body would not be able to handle 90mins of football if he did then people would of slated him for playing a player who is clearly unfit ect lol the guy can't win .

Ofcourse but this transfer window gone Hughes has done what he could do. Do people honestly think that of Hughes was able to sign Dawson or samba this window he would have said no ? Of course not he would have snapped them up.
