  • Hughes has to stay

I can completely understand the reactions and the panic amongst the supporters of our club at the moment. The manager without a doubt has to be held accountable for what is going wrong on the pitch at the moment. However in my opinion Mark Hughes simply cannot be removed from his position as manager of this club despite what appears to be a very difficult season ahead and one which may end in relegation.

Since arriving at the club an awful lot of work behind the scenes has been going on to take this club forward. From the bottom up the whole club has been restructured. Mark Hughes appointment is about more than just what happens on the pitch in my opinion the impression that I get is he actively involved in some of the decision making for the business itself. We hear a lot of positive things coming out of the club behind-the-scenes since Fernandes has come in and appointed Hughes but we are just not getting it right on the pitch at present but that can change. In the short term it is clearly not working but the appointment of Mark Hughes in the long term in my opinion would be good for the club. I want stability more than anything else and the only person to get the best out of the current group of players is the current manager because they are all virtually his signings. Appointing another manager at this stage poses too much risk to the future of the club. Where ever he has gone Mark Hughes has been a slow starter. However the man has Premiership pedigree, his previous jobs underline that fact. Should he lose his job at our club he will come back stronger than ever in the future I have no doubt about that you only have to look at the likes of Alan Pardew before he become Newcastle manager and where he is now. Mark Hughes has brought too much personnel in to enable another manager to come in and successfully take over the squad without making more major changes. The likes of Harry Redknapp are incapable of operating without a big budget and for a club or our size could end up sinking us into more trouble as they attempt to stamp their authority over the club.

I am as disappointed as the next man about this season and to be honest could barely bring myself to watch the game today. I've been quoted a number of times recently stating my football team are ruining my life at present. However I realise this, these things can take time and there is no point getting on the managers and players backs. The best thing we can do is show the club we as supporters are prepared to dig deep despite everything which is going on around us and hopefully this positivity has an impact on the team.

We are in a relegation battle this season we need to except that. I do believe this manager will get it right on the pitch and we have already seen evidence of this in our last five home games last season that when it really matters he can get the players to perform for him. To analyse where is all gone wrong I think we all agree it lays with the defence. You build from the back it's the golden rule and he has failed to do this. We need to go back to basics and if it means parking the bus then that's what we need to do.

So despite not agreeing with tactics, team selections and formations I am in the camp "he got us in this mess, let him get us out"...I suspect not many are with me at present but be careful what you wish for, this could all be turned around in a matter of matches...it just might click but we if we behave in a reactive manner to situations all the time the downward spiral may only really begin once Hughes in gone. The past ten months hard work may be about to lead to ten years of stability or if he goes ten years of decline. The Board still seem to think they have the right man and when he first took the job so did the majority of us.

So IMO Hughes has to stay

Great post W12 - totally agree. Sacking him 7 games in would make us a laughing stock (yes, more so than we already are at the bottom of the league!) and would take us back to our Tango & Cash days.
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

Hes a football manager he's paid to win games and isnt doing so. If we go down the whole 'business model' you talk about is redundant.

      End of story for me.

Yes, great post W12. The only small caveat I would put on it is that I don't think we should commit to Hughes for the future, or even the season, no matter what. If things haven't improved by early December it will be time to seriously look at replacing him. Or if we keep losing every match, likely sooner. But in the meantime, like you, I have confidence he will turn it around.

6 wins since january, how long should he have, no away wins, no home wins ( this season), too many early goals, swapping and changing players positions, how long to find his 1st 11

I hope this will be the outcome. Because, If I´m perfectly honest with myself, I´m sick and tired of supporting a club which sack it´s manager every other month. No good for Branding and reputation amongst potentially new players either.

Well written piece of an argument and a much more constructive reaction to this loss than my usual kneejerk-reaction.

By the end of november we will be getting cut adrift, i really worry for us if we stick with him. The team has no fight and no organisation.

                    Agree with original post

We need to stand firm and support the manager and the team, despite the appalling start to the season.

Football is a results business. Hughes will get the sack if he doesn't pick up a win in the next few games, i'm sure of it.

For us that would mean around 29k."

Totally agree with the original post. Fed up with the moaning, we need stablity now, we certainly don't need Redknapp, look what mess he got Portsmouth and Southampton into, he only works well with a big club who he can spend what he wants with. One of the first things he would do is get rid of Taarabt, he wouldn't keep us up either and we would be like Portsmouth in a few years time.

Ok we are not getting the results yet but overall the club is stronger than it has ever been with the infrastructure being put in place, Mike Rigg said himself in his interview that they have not done anything that would financially ruin the club.

Why don't the negative people just concentrate on the end of the world happening on the 21st December, they won't have to worry about the end of the season then.

                              Great post, W12.
We have to stick by Mark Hughes, I've seen all our games bar Citeh away, and we are not a million miles away from being a very good side.
If Mark can get our defence to tighten up more, stop us conceding stupid goals, we'll pick up points, no mistake.
