  • Paying the price for lack of strikers

I actually think that defensively we are not too badly off.
With Nelsen and any one of Hill, Ferdinand or Mbia as centre backs with a fit Traore and Boswinga we look fairly good.

Together with four from the hundred and four midfielders Hughes has assembled we look more than reasonable in that department too. At times the football has been some of the best I have seen in a long while ( although in small doses admittedly ).

The biggest problem I can see facing us this year is where the hell are the goals gonna come from?

There just aren't any goals in this squad.

Yeah we will score a few here and there but can't see anyone being even remotely consistent for the season.

Cisse is very hot and cold, Bobby is knocking in a few at the moment but how long will it last and no one in the entire country expected Johnson to be fit beyond the first two months of the season so what a poor signing he proved to be.

I name only those 3 because imo we have no other strikers of note.

Mackie, Tarrabt and Hoillett are not strikers by definition, more attacking wingers with a good eye for goal at times.

Look at the stats for our games this year and they are very telling. Last night for instance - 13 shots, 9 on target - one goal!

Not anywhere near good enough for this level.

We constantly take the ball to the last third and then have no idea what to do with it, apart from Adel none of them look confident enough to have a shot half the time and when we do it is often a poor effort. So many keepers look good against us mainly due to the lack of a decent striker.

Three games at home in the league so far and just 1 goal to show for it in 270 minutes of football.

I honestly believe the defence and midfield will be much better than they are at the mo but it is the lack of strikers which is really gonna cost us.

It's been a position largely ignored for many years and I reckon we are going to seriously struggle til January when we will hopefully address the situation and please God it won't be too late.

Shame DJ never got much of a chance... the season before he joined us he got 13 goals in 31 appearances in the PL. I don't think there's another club quite as talented as we are at taking a good player and ruining them.

        To go into a Premiership season with a striker trio of;

AJ - never been prolific & horrendous injury record

Cisse - ageing & known to start well then fade at clubs

Zamora - last 5-6 years been a unit for strikers to feed off of his knock downs & headers & again doesn't score many at all.

        AND THAT'S IT!!!

Big mistake from Hughes & I guarantee we'll be the lowest scoring team in the league this season.

We just haven't got goal scorers in our side.

Completely agree mate- it's not a coincidence either. Maybe has something to do with some of our fans always having to have a target/boo boy and villifying players after a couple of bad games. Shame really.

this is why i never got how come we put ephraim in the squad. surely was better to throw in dj/hulse/bothroyd ideally we shouldn't have sold helguson.

ephraim wont kick a ball for us this season. nothing against the guy.. really like his attitude.
Soldier: "im on reconnaissance sir.. im looking for our camouflage expert.. have you seen him?"
            Lovejoy: "No?!"
Soldier: "GOD DAMNIT THAT GUYS GOOD!"

Would have loved to see DJ get a fair crack... his treatment seems pretty harsh to me.

Problem defensively is we don't have a clear cut back four that are going to have the fitness levels required to play the majority of games. Nelsen and Hill are too old to play week in week out, performing at their best and staying fit. Mbia is injury prone. Bosingwa has had a fair number of injury problems too. I also worry about the defensive coaching - Richards and Lescott were weak links at City under Hughes, but came right under Mancini. Even Kompany, who Hughes rightly gets a lot of credit for signing, didn't become world-class until Mancini came in.

Likewise. We have so many midfielders, can't see Hogan ever getting much of a chance.

this is so true, but, we have Hoilett and Tarbs to supplement the goals . For some reason Hughes seems to think we can get by without them

can't disagree wth any of the posts here regarding our strikers
don't thnk our defenders as a unit are premier league standard, maybe Boswnga, Fabio (only on loan) Nelsen (getting on) the other not great really
to be successful, we have to score more goals than concede
why have these 2 areas not been addressed properly
                        good strikers = goals
good defenders = less goals conceded

I have to agree with most of the points made on this subject, it is a tad worrying! At the moment I think we have to really hope we're not too far back when the next transfer window opens because it looks like this will have to be dealt with if we don't find more goals! I still think Adel and Hoilett should be able to score a bunch for us out of the midfield though!

After the major overhaul of our. Squad I thought was us done in the transfer market.

Looks like now we'll be hunting big time for a striker in january to score the goals to keep us up!!! Not good.
