I think Pardew is a really good manger, who is getting better every season. I must admit 8 years is a long time though. But when you consider how long Arsenal and Manchester United have kept their managers, maybe it's a good thing. Crewe also kept Dario Gradi around a long time and they have an excellent youth set up as a result.

I'd love to see us have that kind of stability and get our us growing our own talent again.

This is madness. How many times have we seen a team do really well one season and then they just start faltering and need a change of management. I think the only reason he got an 8 year deal is he is mates with the Chairman.

Newcastle aren't faltering though. And David Moyes has had a really good season at Everton, then a really bad one, then back to good again in the past. This is why knee jerk reactions are terrible, and you need to look at the big picture. Judge on seasons, and maybe not even just one but several.

I don't think it is a knee-jerk reaction to question whether a manager is taking your team as far as they can go. Sometimes a change of personnel is needed. Look at Leeds, Wilkinson got them up, they won the League two seasons later, then after an awful season where they were great at home bit failed to win away, he got them into the top six for the next two seasons. However, the next season he was sacked in September. It wasn't knee-jerk, it was more a case of the club feeling that progress was not being made, that Wilkinson had got the club as far as he could, and that someone else was needed to take them further.
And I know some Everton fans on 606 have similar feeling on Moyes, He got them into Europe twice, but now they seem to be a top eight club. And some fans would like a change, they think this is about as far as he can take them and it would be nice to try another manager who could, with the same resources, make them into a top four club. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Marshy, your story ends abruptly. What happened after Wilkinson left? Where are Leeds now? Everton are having a great start to the season, their best in many a year in fact, if they had got rid of Moyes who would they have gotten in that would be able to make them a top 8 club every season?

Changing managers can work, but more often that not it actually changes nothing and either maintains the status quo or makes the team worse.

Well, Leeds had some great seasons afterwards, getting to the Champions League semi-final.

I'm not disagreeing with you regarding Moyes, all I am saying is that sometimes in life we need a change, even if it will work out for the worst. If I was a Newcastle fan, and for the next four seasons we finished in positions 5-8, and were not winning any trophies, I would probably want a change. Not because I would be unhappy with the manager, but because I would just like to give someone else a chance who could maybe take us further. Of course, it could end up worse, but that is a risk I would be willing to take - that's what makes things exciting.

They spent well over their means to get there, and they still have yet to recover. They're signing our cast offs. In retrospect Howard Wilkinson getting sacked was a huge mistake, wouldn't you agree?

Yes, but Everton have stuck by Moyes and are reaping the rewards. Change for changes sake isn't good. Last season they wanted to sack Wenger at Arsenal. Now a lot of people are backing them as dark horses for the title. I'd imagine they will beat Chelsea this weekend too.

Not everyone can win a trophy, and you're not going to challenge Man United, Arsenal and the likes by ejecting your manager every year. Unless you spend loads of money, like Chelsea have. Look at Spurs, they got rid of Redknapp and he finished 4th. I would lay money they will struggle to finish that high again for quite awhile. In fact, Newcastle probably will finish higher than them this season.

My best friend is a Leeds fan, so I have followed them a lot over the past 25 years. And most Leeds fans do not think sacking Sgt Wilko was a mistake. They appreciated all he did for the club, but the football had become mundane - there was no real excitement. Football isn't all about finishing in a respectable position in the league table - it is about excitement, adrenalin, a rush. Just because you are happy with stability, it does not mean you should accuse fans who want a change of manager as being knee-jerkers.

We can't comment on Harry leaving Spurs because I do not know the details of why he was sacked. For all we know, maybe he was demanding he be given more money to spend than the club wanted to make available.

But we haven't had stability Marshy, have we? I could say that it's people who want the manager out every year that are ruining this club, and I'd think that's a valid point.

I agree. We don't need managerial changes all the time, and if I thought MH was a good manager, I wouldn't care if we were bottom of the table come March, I would still support him. Fact is, I just don't rate the guy, and so if he doesn't deliver soon, I would think it might be better to relieve him than to let him continue spending money.

But the thing is, there is no guarantee the next manager will be any better. You might even think he is worse than Hughes. Then what? Another squad overhaul, new backroom staff more instability. Results may or may not improve, if they don't then fans call for another new manager.
