Right this is in no way a criticism of our new keeper before we go any further.
Has anyone else noticed that he doesn't hold the ball much when making saves? Is this a weakness that other teams will exploit? Alot of his saves pushes the ball back into play rather than round the post or over the bar. Just wonder how patient we all would be if this was Rob Green? As I say he is a great keeper, but it surprises me how much he parries the shots back into play.

cesar has very much a continental, maybe even mediterranean keeping approach. in serie a they have favoured palming balls away and fend-offs rather than collecting and holding. it's just a different style of keeping. less so in the bundesliga and in france but you also see a similar approach in spain.

by contrast, a more uk-style keeper does not parry or punch away as a first choice course of action when similar balls are played into the box. overall i prefer the continental style because i think it demonstrates that the keeper is prepared to command his own penalty box rather than stand back too much. that said, yes it's dangerous - parrying the ball back towards the edge of the penalty box where oppo players might be running in is a risk.
    come on you r's!

Tbf some of the stinging shots he saved yesterday there was no way he could have saved em, done well just to keep em out.

Yesterday's vile weather must have been very hard for any goalkeeper and in swirling wnd and rain, I think it's a bit harsh to question his keeping.
On a positive note, he tries to play the ball out and keep possession. As I mentioned on a different thread, we had 57% possesson yesterday and he played his part in that.
He's also instilled some confidence into the defence, which Green didn't. We probably made more passes yesterday than in any game I've seen and the mentality is definitely changing. We now have the players who can keep the ball and retaining possession tires out opponents and eventually creates chances.

See my signature, I've been going on about this for months. I asked Anton about this yesterday, what do you think of the new ball -that it's a nightmare, but all he would say was it swerves all over the place.

I was also going by the few saves he made against chelsea too, where he also pushed it back towards the edge of the penalty area. Not having a go he has been a breath of fresh air I just wonder if that will be picked up on by the opposition or as Matty says it was just well struck shots that he did well to stop. He also likes to punch crosses I notice rather than catch so as SirDuncs has said is it just his style?
If it's the way he does things our defence will need to be aware that shots will come in and they need to ready to defend the 2nd ball if it comes back into play

Interesting Greengrass so maybe he's doing all he can with the new balls, didn't know that

EXACTLY . . . . . . Not an ounce of blame for either goal

Its a refreshing approach compared to spilling the ball into the net! :music:

In fairness I dont think Dave was getting at that at all, just noting that he does palm alot out which, admittedly he does, but IMO its not a problem as hes not palming at corners or anything, its proper strikes that he is doing well even to save. Wish Green would have palmed that first goal vs Swansea

Well it's obvious that he can easily catch it if he wanted to as shown yesterday when he caught a few stinging shots when the Spurs players were ready to pounce for the rebound, but he does palm it out quite a bit ,probably something they were told to do over in Italy...but it's fine He'll just be told by the goalkeeping coach to stop doing that so often.

Saw a compilation of him on Youtube and it was punch after punch. So that's obviously his preferred style. Do wonder how long it will take before the opposition pick up on it and he may not look so good in the Premiership then? Having said that, no denying he is a quality keeper.

No I wasn't blaming him for the goals, just making an observation.Just wondered if it could spell trouble for us. Although tbf he hasn't been that busy so maybe as Matty has said these were just well struck efforts that he did well to stop what with this new ball an all
