  • Home Grown

We have 15 home grown players in our 25 man squad. This was only beaten by Stoke 19, Norwich 18 and Villa and Reading with 17.These clubs and Spurs were the only teams able to name 25 man squads.
The worst were Wigan with 6 and were only able to name a 20 man squad. Obviously Under 21s do not count. A few injuries and some sides could have a bit bother.

Can you try to expand upon this thread its lacking detail...for instance are you saying Wigan only have a 20 man squad?

    I don't understand!

When you say 'home grown' do you mean players that have come up through our academy, if si I doubt that very much!!

Each team must have 8 players classed as home grown in their 25 man squad. To be classed as home grown a player must have been registered with an English or Welsh club for 3 years between his 16th and 21st birthday.
Any club unable to comply with this must name a smaller squad therefore Wigan have only named a 20 man squad.

Not sure this makes sense. You're saying 8 players must be 'home grown'. Wigan have 6/8. Therefore they are missing 2 players. How does it work out they have their squad cut by 5?

Think I may have answered my own question
'For the 2012/13 season each club had a deadline on 4th September to submit a squad containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the Home Grown Player criteria. The remainder of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be Home Grown.'

Therefore don't have to name 8 but then can't fill the 25. Most clubs have a decent youth setup so not sure we can read into this too much.

Well, some squads may have trouble. But then we don't know what their youth set ups are like. Injuries can be catastrophic to a season for sure though, as Bolton found out last year.

I think the original poster should try doing a little bit more research before starting threads like this...

Think the OP is just trying to start a discussion, nothing wrong with that. Some more information would certainly be nice though.

I'm interested in the discussion but some facts would be nice as you highlighted

first thing comes to mind when saying home grown is they have come through the youth or academy sides, we are years away from that, lets hope 5-10 years down the line with the academy we can achieve it. Our most successful teams have been when half the team grew up together
I must away now, I can no longer tarry
This morning's tempest I have to cross
I must be guided without a stumble
Into the arms I love the most

not really sure what to make of a thread called....home grown!! sticking to the football version-a home grown squad means a squad that has come from an academy along with players that have been bought in their late teens and intregrated with those young "homegrown" young lads.not many teams pull it off.
