  • On Park and His Fans

    Greetings Rangers Fans,

I would like to say that, I, like millions of Korean fans, look forward to an exciting season for the Rs. As you may know, most Koreans are Ji Sung Park fans first, the club he is playing for will always be of secondary interest. This will not fit your understanding of what a typical "football fan" would be like in your country, but this is the new reality. In Korea, stars like Park is the reason why most Koreans became interested in football to begin with, back in 2002 when Korea co-hosted the World Cup. Park represents in part the desires, aspirations, and pride of an entire country. Seen in this light, it would not make much sense for local Rs fans to expect an interested Korean fan to show more interest and loyalty to your football club than to Park himself. Many Koreans are not even much interested in football per se, Park is a draw for consumers outside of the traditional football target market.

The Korean posters on this and other QPR fan forums will therefore obviously focus on Park and his contributions to the team. On their behalf, I ask for your tolerance and understanding, there are a lot of excited "fans" from abroad who do not comprehend your football culture. They should not be slated or ignored because of this.

My greater concern however is with the growing negative attitude and diminished goodwill towards Park by some of the locals as a result of the massive interest and what could be construed as excessive enthusiasm Park has generated by his fans. This is no fault of Park himself and he should not be ostracized by the very fans he is trying to serve.

As per the captain issue. All I have to say is that Park is the consummate team player and professional. He plays for the team. He would rather let others get the glory during a game if it better serves the team. You can see this attitude in his unselfishness and desire to constantly promote effective team play during the seven years at Man Utd. I believe this is the main reason MH decided on Park to captain the team for now. The players needs desperately to gel and play as a team. Regardless of what the reasons for MH selecting Park may be, Park himself would never insist on being captain solely as a means to boost his own ego. He is in many respects "ego-less" with respect to the team. This is not a sign of weakness or a weak personality. It takes great strength to be unselfish. Park is an unselfish leader. Park also understands the importance of following, he is the kind of player who commits and backups 100% whatever the coach deems is best for the club.

It would be unfair for the local QPR to think less of Ji Sung Park as a result of what some Korean fans may have expressed on your forum. I would suggest you judge him based on the content of his character and what he does for the team on the pitch.

    Thank you.

I don't think anyone thinks less of Park as a result of his fans, as I hope no-one thinks any less of the club as a result of ours. We just don't need endless threads that focus solely on him.

How can you say that? I just wonder? All players in a team, regardless of nation, will from time to time have to cope with critisism.
Personally, I think he has started well in a team which needs to gel properly. But my personal opinion on him is that he is best as a right winger.

Ps. Itīs a good post generally:=): You raise many valid points..

There was pretty much universal acceptance that he had a very good game, and if you check the MoM ratings at the top of the page, he's 2nd in the voting.

I think only one person has actively said he was rubbish, and he appeared to be wumming tbh. At least I hope he was!

No need for the leaping to the defence of a player that isn't in need of defending.

Yep exactly personally he should always be played on the wing. Just like what the Koreans said when he first joined "do not play him in the cm position" of I remembered yet MH did he didnt really have a option to but when he was on the wide midfield a different player.
The reason he is captain is not because he is loud and commanding because he is a perfect example of a footballer.a pro that if you did what he does you can't go wrong . Sorry to compare him to joey but joey was a captain who was loud and commanding but a bad example for his team mates apart from his effort.
Like they said on the call in show captaincy has changed you do not have to be loud to be a captain other members of the squad will command there team in their positions.example nelson defenders faurlin midfield Zamora up top.
Park is just the guy you look at when times are good or bad because he behaves the same throughout a game whether losing or winning .

I mentioned after the Norwich match that PJS was the best performing players. He will come better with time and I do not think we will that much concern about his fans.

Hi Seoul Man, good post and well said.

Anyone with any sense knows the majority of Korean fans are Park fans and shouldn't expect anything else, at least this early into his QPR career anyway. With time i'm sure they will grow to also love QPR.

It annoys me when i see people moaning about some of our new Park fans posting threads about him, as if they are less worthy than any other thread. Yet they are quite content to post rubbish themselves about any random subjects as if to suggest other people want to read their dross instead.

I was just trying to point out that he might even be better on the wing.

Hang on, I wasn't having a go at you.

This board definitely loses a bit of context without multiple quotes.

Is that possible in the settings, or is there a reason for only quoting the one post in a reply?

Hi Seoul Man: welcome to the forum. You have every reason to be very proud of Park. Every QPR fan I have spoken to was delighted to sign him and I was one of many really pleased to see so many Korean fans at Loftus Rd. Certainly our more thoughtful fans also realise that for you Park will naturally be your primary interest, just as a couple of Moroccan posters on here follow everything Adel does. We in turn over time hope that your interest will gradually grow in our/ your club as a whole.

All I would warn you about is that although we are a small/ medium-sized club we are very passionate, so when we lose we sometimes say something we shouldn't. So there will be times over the season when fans say "Park is rubbish" or something more Anglo-Saxon - it probably isn't what they really think, but at that moment they are just expressing their frustration. Come the next match the same fans will be cheering him on and singing his name. He is a great signing for us and when we can finally field a full strength team we should see him at his best on the right wing.

Its a new experience for both sets of fans and I'm sure in time we will get the hang of each other...

Welcome to the site, the idea of bringing players like Park is because they attract a fan base all on their own.

The club want these fans to follow and become fans of QPR as well, it's very hard to do when some of our own fans don't make them feel welcome.

We should be happy that the fans base is growing, it don't matter where it comes from or how.

Just to show off, I would like to point out that I was a Korean QPR supporter before Ji-Sung got here. I've been a QPR supporter since way back. WAY BACK. Like 2011.

Does that mean I'm officially the longest-running Korean QPR supporter? Hell yes. I'm going to put it in my signature to show off...

"Growing negative attitude?" LOL. Do me a favor and DO NOT GO BACK TO THIS MESSAGE BOARD WHEN THE SIGNING WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED. It took about a week to get all the racist humor out.

It's been good ever since. It'll get better once QPR gets a few more wins and starts moving up the table. Once we gel and start winning, it'll be a Korean love-fest here.

Good sentiment, but I wouldn't worry. The QPR supporters are behind Ji-Sung.

And we're excellent judges of character. Our last captain was Joey Barton... :=B:
