Greetings Rangers Fans,
I would like to say that, I, like millions of Korean fans, look forward to an exciting season for the Rs. As you may know, most Koreans are Ji Sung Park fans first, the club he is playing for will always be of secondary interest. This will not fit your understanding of what a typical "football fan" would be like in your country, but this is the new reality. In Korea, stars like Park is the reason why most Koreans became interested in football to begin with, back in 2002 when Korea co-hosted the World Cup. Park represents in part the desires, aspirations, and pride of an entire country. Seen in this light, it would not make much sense for local Rs fans to expect an interested Korean fan to show more interest and loyalty to your football club than to Park himself. Many Koreans are not even much interested in football per se, Park is a draw for consumers outside of the traditional football target market.
The Korean posters on this and other QPR fan forums will therefore obviously focus on Park and his contributions to the team. On their behalf, I ask for your tolerance and understanding, there are a lot of excited "fans" from abroad who do not comprehend your football culture. They should not be slated or ignored because of this.
My greater concern however is with the growing negative attitude and diminished goodwill towards Park by some of the locals as a result of the massive interest and what could be construed as excessive enthusiasm Park has generated by his fans. This is no fault of Park himself and he should not be ostracized by the very fans he is trying to serve.
As per the captain issue. All I have to say is that Park is the consummate team player and professional. He plays for the team. He would rather let others get the glory during a game if it better serves the team. You can see this attitude in his unselfishness and desire to constantly promote effective team play during the seven years at Man Utd. I believe this is the main reason MH decided on Park to captain the team for now. The players needs desperately to gel and play as a team. Regardless of what the reasons for MH selecting Park may be, Park himself would never insist on being captain solely as a means to boost his own ego. He is in many respects "ego-less" with respect to the team. This is not a sign of weakness or a weak personality. It takes great strength to be unselfish. Park is an unselfish leader. Park also understands the importance of following, he is the kind of player who commits and backups 100% whatever the coach deems is best for the club.
It would be unfair for the local QPR to think less of Ji Sung Park as a result of what some Korean fans may have expressed on your forum. I would suggest you judge him based on the content of his character and what he does for the team on the pitch.
Thank you.
