Surprised by the team selection today. I think Park on the right and Hoilett on the left would have been a better strategy, and I was concerned it was a bit much to throw Faurlin in but he did well.

    Players:

Green - did fine. Not to blame for any of the goals.
Bosingwa - reads the game very well, lots of composure and a top class player.
Nelsen - looked pretty solid. Again he reads the game well and definitely a better option than Hill.
Ferdinand - think he might be the one to make way for Mbia.
Fabio - moments of brilliance followed by moments of frustration. Could be a v good player but needs to improve his passing.
Granero - really like the look of him. Passed well and spread the play. For a debut I thought he was impressive.
Faurlin - great to see him back. Played well and will get better when he's fully fit and match sharp.
SWP - tracks back well but on the whole very frustrating. Would have preferred Park right and Hoilett left.
Park - outstanding. Really works hard, rarely puts a foot wrong. Would like to see him shoot sometimes when in the right position.
Bobby Z - had a real tussle with Lescott. Played well, got the goal and I think he'll be an important player for us this season.
Johnson - frustrating day for him. Didn't see a lot of the ball and Kompany & Lescott are 2 world class centre halves. Played ok though.

First half was very frustrating. We showed no real composure and not a huge amount of desire either! Second half much better. We had a few good chances and on another day we might have scraped a draw.

Overall I think there are reasons to be positive. Shame we got off to such a bad start against Swansea followed by a run of hard games but I think we'll do ok. Still a bit worried about our defence but let's see what Mbia can do.

Our support was pretty much non-existant. Quite a lot of empty seats and very quiet. It's been like that for a while now - not like the good old days in League 1 when we used to get behind the team. Somebody please tell the teenagers at the top that they're pathetic and not funny in any way. The "you're just a bunch of Arabs" etc was embarrassing. I know they're a small minority but it's a shame we have these people representing the club. We moved at half time just to get away from them.

Anyway, hopefully Hughes will get these players to gel and we certainly have some strength in depth across the midfield now. Nice touch from Granero at the end to come and give his shirt to a youngster at the front.

    Onwards and upwards hopefully.

Good to see a nice analysis instead of the "we were great and if you don't agree you're not a fan" brigade.

Also better than the "we're all doomed, and if you don't agree then you're a part of the "we were great and if you don't agree you're not a fan" brigade" brigade

Why does everyone have to be in a brigade anyway? I'm already in the PC brigade apparently, can I be in two at the same time?

yes, thanks for the post. I think we have good players and when you say frustrating, maybe you are slightly generous. SWP has been frustrating for too long. We were away to the champions, so no one would have bet in us to win (although I did).

I would rather see SWP only come on when games are very stretched and pace becomes more important as he can't do anything except run.

Anton and Fabio - not sure they are going to cut it. No point having a fab 4 in midfield if the defence has weaknesses.

                Thanks!

Overall I think today showed that we CAN become a very good team but we will need to be patient (and as football fans we're not generally very good at that!). 2 weeks off should do us some good.

I'm still undecided about Fabio and think I'd like to see Traore have a good run in the team. Anybody concerned about right back doesn't need to be anymore. Bosingwa really is a class act.

Chelsea will be a very tough match but the team I'd like to see would be:

                ........................Cesar or Green......................

                Bosingwa......Mbia.............Nelsen........Traor e

                Park.............Faurlin...........Granero........ Hoilett

                ......................Cisse.......Zamora.......... ............

Bit harsh on Johnson but that's the team I'd choose.

Seems a good line up. Is more or less what I'd pick, except I may start Tarbs over Hoilett and keep Fabio in. I hope Hughes is watching a video of the Super Cup Final too.

All we need to do is have someone play like Falcao and we're golden...

Absolutely - there's real competition in midfield with Taarabt and Diakite when he's back too.

I haven't seen it to be honest, was working. They always seem to do well against teams who boss possession, figured they must have a good game plan to be so consistent?

For sure, also add Traore could play left midfield too, puts in some great crosses. Competition is really going to hot up.

Yes I really like Traore. Hoilett & Traore down the left would provide a lot of creativity if they can back each other defensively as well. Lots to look forward to with this team once we get it right.

Pretty much agree with all that except the Green comment, he was woeful. At start of the game said to the guy next to me how sorry I felt for him with Cesar coming in but first goal he could have got the first cross then was slow to react and had weak hands for the shot. Second goal was a header from a cross in the six yard box which he could easily have come for. Third goal accept nothing he could do but the whole game he looked a bag of nerves and does not inspire any confidence in the rest of the team
