By making it known you have more than one target each agent will be making sure that their boy and them get the best deal and contract possible from us it will also make them think twice about whether we really want them. Not chucking eggs in one basket just making them believe we are the best option and believe in what we are trying to sell them.If you fail with your number then move on down the list but we should never make it known who is on that list.

But then if you don't get your number one guy, number two knows he is second best. By having an interest in several players at once, you can say these are my top targets. Plus, it shows your intention to land a quality defender and won't let one club/agent hold you to ransom. Because you can say, do one we'll get Shawcross instead.

I'm not sure what you're talking about to be honest. You're saying it's naive to, do what exactly?
If anything it's naive to have one target that other clubs are interested in, if you don't land him then you need to start over again. With a heavy September coming up clearly they want someone in as soon as possible.

Either would be great signings but I'd take a fully fit Dawson over Shawcross. Dawson is the leadership figure we are massively lacking. Back in 2010 and early 2011 he was one of the best centre backs in the league IMO, and should have been a starter for England at World Cup 2010.
I like Shawcross as he's an intimidating figure, good in the air, but I think Dawson adds more in terms of leadership, positioning and reading of the game.
