  • Barton leaving QPR on loan would be blocked by Football League - Guardian

Joey Barton was sent off for violent conduct on the final day of last season.

The 29-year-old is set to serve a 12-match ban after he was sent off on the final day of last season at Manchester City and was later found guilty of two counts of violent conduct by the Football Association.

Barton has spent pre-season training with the League Two side Fleetwood and has now returned to the west London club.

QPR had reportedly hoped to send the midfielder out on loan to a Football League club as his ban would be served quicker due to the volume of games played.

However, the Football League would oppose any such move and would refuse to register him while his ban remains.

The Football League is understood to be uncomfortable with the circumventing of the FA punishment and believe it would bring the loan system into disrepute.

QPR would not comment on the matter when contacted.

Makes sense and was always likely to be the case they'd kick up if we tried it, simply becasue he wouldn't be going there to play, obviously, just to run the ban down.

Surely if he went out on loan for the whole season they shouldn't object, he would still be banned and it's him who was supposed to be punished not the club?

He is banned for 12 games whether he is in the 25 man squad or not, going to a team overseas (where he may be able to play) is irrelevant. It's not what he plays elsewhere that counts so much as what he misses here.

Is that definitely correct..? I would of thought by registering with a team abroad he would effectively not be registered with an English league (during the loan) and therefore the games wouldn't count?????

He's a QPR player, he starts his ban from the first match of the season and has to serve a 12 game ban. That ban prevents him from playing for us (and it seems anyone who signs him on loan). If Hughes has him in the 25 squad from the start of September there will be 10 more to serve before he can play. If he is left out of the squad until January then he can play from the date the window opens (as the squad rule is suspended during that period).
If he goes abroad I guess the ban is ineffective, by which I mean he cannot be prevented from playing in said foreign league - but he and, in turn, we (QPR) are deprived of the opportunity of selecting him for those 12 games - which is the purpose of the ban. The ban is effective from day one of the season - if, for example, Barton got injured in pre-season training and required surgery, thus effectively ruling him out for a few weeks, the league could not then say "Barton, your ban will commence from the date you are fit and available".
I have no idea what, if any power the PL have to prevent him from going abroad for a few months and keeping fit. Honestly though, I doubt they have any say whatsoever?

Sorry Del - the player is still registered with his parent Club despite being on loan elsewhere. He retains his membership of the Players Union and all the benefits that go with it too :=):

I am confused here. Is he banned for 12 games (whether or not available for whatever reason) or is he banned for 12 games which he is available to play for?

He is banned for (the first) 12 games (of the season). This includes cup matches.

im not sure that a ban isnt intended to handicap the team

i see no ethical issue in captain barton playing on loan somewhere. he is banned from the league as his punishment, and qpr are denied his services as their punishment. a loan agreement satisfies
both points. undeservedly and temporarily i hope
