Don't kid yourself that the money would have been spent on hospitals/NHS instead. We haven't had the Olympics for ages, and haven't built a world class health system now have we? Get real.
so what would have the government have spent the wasted billions on then? As a small business man myself i can tell you that during the worst recession this country has had for decades it is not the time to flush away billions of pounds on this shite. I am at the pointy end of this double dip and where is the promised help from Cameron for small businessmen like me and thousands of others like me? no ****ing where. Then we have to get in from another long day at work and watch TV highlights of billions being pissed up a wall. Its all politics anyhow as Cameron needs the feel good factor this will create in the sheep and so will that weasel Boris as he rides it all the way back into goverment and maybe even party leadership...watch this space.

It cost money, it generates money. Some gain, some don't, some spend some taxes a bit on it. I don't really care. I would rather my tax was spent on this than the massive underclass of people this country has enabled that don't want to work. Let them die and we can all be better off. There - how is that.

Oh and for the record - why should you get "help" because there is a recession. We are all paying for it. As a business you take a risk - you probably would not be giving all your millions away if your business had made you a millionaire.

actually you do have a point :-)
and the "help" i was referring to is not cash payouts but help as in tax relief and business rates deferral...anything to help small business's survive because without us the economy will never recover. Take a look at your local High Street...see those empty units? now imagine them all empty except for the multi nationals and that Silver is a bleak future for us all. I suppose it shouldnt surprise me as this generation seems to have the attitude of "enjoy it now and pay for it never" as that is what has put us where we are today. So enjoy the games, dont think of the politics or the wider aspects or impact of a recession hit country paying out all those billions, of the little man trying to survive a 30 -40 per cent hit in his business due to downward trends in tourism thanks to these games. Enjoy yourself cos your alright Jack and **** it worry about it when it affects YOU.

Brick and mortar has been dying for years because of poor business practice and the internet. Adapt to survive. Blaming things like the olympics won't get you anywhere.

not blaming the Olympics for the recession obviously! But i think it is a disgusting waste of money with things the way they are and just putting your head under the covers like sheep and not wanting or caring how much this has cost is a symptom of current society. Same sheep got us where we are today. Nothing against the athletes as even though i have absolutely zero interest in any of the sports i can understand their huge commitment to training for their big day. The media coverage has also been way way over the top as their are plenty of people around who couldnt give a toss about the Olympics. Personally i would swap all the medals teamgb have won for a single goal against Swansea. Tour De France/ Olympics its been one non event after another...need the football back! :-)

..and of course, that's just the UK. Wonder what the figures WW are like.

...and although it sounds harsh - what is doing the opposite at this point going to achieve. Nothing. Absolutely nothing at all. You cannot affect it. It's here, it's happening. Personally, as I mentioned above, I try and not expend too much energy focusing on the negatives of something I absolutely now cannot affect in any what whatsoever. What's the point? Protest as much as you like in advance if you don't agree with it - and you should do that - it's right to help people achieve a balanced view, but once it's here - what's the point? Might as well just embrace it and enjoy it for what it is in SPORTING terms.

                            • I am thoroughly enjoying the Netherlands- New Zealand ladies hockey at the moment. For many reasons

Almost a decapitation at 27:45 here though. That must have hurt. A lot.

Crowd reaction on the replay is funny too...

The home of Paris Olympics on BBC Sport online. Includes the latest news stories, results, fixtures, video and audio.

Most of the dutch team are impossibly cute. Most of the office have stopped working to watch. Moments before that hockey smash there was the faceplant in the BMX. Collective 'oooooffffffff'
