Whilst this isnt an official response since I just run the server and join in on occasions.
I just checked the moderator log for the past few days and all I see is a couple of thread merges. These pulled related posts into one conversation stream that was just 5 pages long.

The problem is it is sometimes difficult to find the threads. When the subject of Ki started again I wanted to find what was said in the original threads. I could not remember when this was, so I typed Ki in the search engine. It did not find anything.
Would it be too complicated to have a general topic, for instance Hoilett, and subtopics underneath,Last edited by jmelanie; 22-07-2012, 02:09 PM.

merging threads is a disaster and generally kills a discussion or at the very least degrades it
in the main i dont see a need for merging its really not a problem to have 2 threads with similar focus people can read one or both and decide which one if any to contribute to it really isnt that hard
and having 2 or more threads on a page with similar focus should not be that confusing for visitors
No disrespect to the admins and mods who i think are on the whole pretty good but the merging threads thing smacks of over control and steering, i dont think it should happen and I think it makes the board a less enjoyable place to be.its New Era number 8 i tell thee, bring on the fireworks

It's all about some people wanting to be the ones who start the thread, therefore sometimes starting their own thread knowing one is already live and being discussed. In this case i agree with merging. It's in the case of a completely different conversation even when talking about the same topic that no merging is necessary imo.Queens Park RangersNPower Champions 2010/2011

It's a balancing act. A few posters requested the two Ki threads to be merged, so I did. I'd have left them apart otherwise and in hindsight perhaps that would have been better. W12, I take your point about threads on the same subject but having a different angle and prefer to leave those be. I would only merge threads if you have an identical discussion on the same player for example, which does happen quite a bit. And people often use 'reply with quote' so in those cases it's not hard to follow the flow of discussion.
The problem with never merging is that often very worthwhile threads will slip off the front page and would then get forgotten about because too many duplicates above take up too much space. As 80's says people often just want to start their own thread for the sake of it, or start a new one without taking the time to check if another one on the same subject already exists. You can then end up with a very cluttered board and the decent threads slip off the radar as most people rarely move off page 1.Last edited by Stanley; 22-07-2012, 06:32 PM.
