Yes he officially has to do 18 months military service but this is constantly being debated. If he decides to stay in the UK he does not have to do the service, but I can't imagine the Koreans would want him to do that.
Plus Asian cup in 2013 is another chance for him to be a freeman.
We all know South Korea is the strongest in Asia. it will be piece of cake being the winner.
and of course in 2014 if u get into top 8 or 4 then its also the case.

Bonheurjh - Where did you hear this by the way?Under Les Ferdinand:
Luke Freeman, top assists in the league: 4million
Alex Smithies, great goalie for this club: 3,5million
Charlie Austin, 19 Premier League goals: 4million
Jack Robinson: Contract ran out, left for free
And many more mistakes

There was an interesting article in a recent edition of When Saturday Comes discussing this exact issue. Was related to the Arsenal player Park Chu-Young. Lawyers for the player who are familiar with the finer points of military law have been able to secure an 8 year delay on entering into service. He is I understand just turned 27yrs and apparently he now has until he is 35yrs old to start his time ! The maximum time you can delay is for 10yrs, but you have to join up by the age of 35yrs. One is normally expected to start conscription by the age of 28yrs. If you are a professional player and sign up and not defer, you can be assigned to the K-Leagues army team who from 2013 will play in the country's second tier. Apparently there is not much public sympathy for allowing players to be totally exempt and not serving their country, so this is a way out without upsetting any one. This is only something I've read so I hope it is factual. Hope this might help out there.
