  • A critical perspective

Just playing devils advocat for a moment.

with all this talk of us having ambition i wish to say that from the signings that we have made so far, compared to other teams (namely promoted teams and fulham) would it be fair to either question our supposed ambition.

all this talk of 45k stadiums put to one side for the moment and let us just focus on the transfer side of things.

so far we have signed andy johnson (3 goals all season how old 32?)

    nelson (how old 36)

    diakite (yes, great buy)

ju sing park (supposedly legs shot how old 32?)

    fabio loan yes only loan.

now, for argument sake, would any of you prefered that we went after clyne 22 years old (soon to be southampton) instead of a nelson or fabio.

how about going after rodeaggea 27 years old (fulham free transfer) instead of an injury prone aging andy johnson. why not a rodriges (21 or 22 year old winger) southampton again 7mil signing.

serious question. have we really done good busniess in the transfer market? is hughes really being backed with money in this window?

also like to add, tony fernandez comments today. paste........................................

"I think, done for a while actually because we would then have a good nucleus for a long time.

"The work then has to start on the academy and bringing through kids, who started at QPR at 11 and go all the way up."

does he expect these ageing players being able to preform in the top league until the youth start coming through the acadamy in probably 4-5 years time?

is he saying that this will be the last of the socalled spending spree? if that is the case, i hold the view that we should have gone for the likes rodeaga and clyne as it would cement our future without the need of spending much again.

p.s please exuse the appalling spelling
    nsa/cia spy on this..............┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐

Premiership experience is missing in the names listed. Mark Hughes listed our entire squad and the amount of experience we never had back in January. Look at that squad then compared to what we have now.

Clyne would be a massive gamble.

      Rodallegas goal record is terrible,

we have let 12 players go so we need to replace them with better quality, this is where the new signings come in. Our squad needs better quality in depth. i think the 'marquee' signings are still to come

Well certainly thought provoking Hitman, and i think you make a good point, my main hope is that the team under-performed last season, and only hit what i hope is their true form from the Liverpool game on, so mix those players with Faurlin,/ and the newboys this window i hope will be enough to keep us up.

Clyne unproven in Prem, Fabio better option

Rodellega 3 goals last season? He will be also Fulhams number 1, whilst Johnson is here as back up.

          Rodrigues unproven and for 7mil?!

Nelson - years of Premier League exprience, poss only back up too.

Park - definitely not "shot", 31yrs old, top top signing.

Bear in mind, the transfer window has only been open not long. Some clubs havent even signed anyone yet. We are already looking for our final pieces.

Also re your academy status, erm, who you really think we won't buy anyone in January, let alone for another 10 years whilst our acadamy team grows up?

Sounds like something a Norwich fan would say about us!

Do you think we have let better players go than we have signed?
I for one feel far more confident about the oncoming season than I did at this time last year.
The word "Survival" hasn't been mentioned once this year.. Last year It was the Buzz word... !!!!!
I feel we are a much more professional football club all round than we have ever been.

Also a number of young players on going on the Asia tour. I assume MH intends to use some of them in the first team at some time.

I think MH is using the method Fergie used when he first went into Man U and a similar think was done in the begining at the Scum, they brought in players like Phelen, Gibson Strachan, Mclair, the Scum went with MH, Zola, Hoddle, Guilitt, and other experienced players.

That method brought those clubs time to build a team, if you look at it, Ned, 24-25, Anton 27, Traore 22, Green 32( baby age for a keeper) Ali 24, Samba 23 Adel 22, Makie 26-27 and the 3-4 youth players ( fingers crossed they make it, or and Mr Connolly 24?

Rome wasn't built in a day and this team has to evolve over the next couple of years, the only way this will happen quite quickly is by buying experience players to help lay the foundations, MH has seen this work first hand on two occasions.
                Kept the faith!

It will take some time and the lads will have to develop chemistry both on and off the pitch, but WE are definitely heading in the right direction and the future looks bright, I have to wear shades.

I just looked up Zamora's scoring record in the prem and matched it against Rodallega's they are more or less the same

Zamora has played 235 games in the prem scoring 52 goals

Rodellega has placed 112 games in the scoring 24 goals

on a games to goals ratio they are more or less the same, I must admit I thought Zamora was alot more prolific than that!!

some reasonable points... diakite and park aside, the new signings are not the sort of signings that i really wanted.

                        but...

what seems clear is that the academy is seen as the long-term future source of players and that, for now at least, seasoned pros with premier league experience are seen as the solution to the really, really important goal of keeping us in the premier league and all the riches that that brings.

if i've got a worry, it's that, as you say, it takes a long long time for youth players to turn into real first team players and, aside from the 'golden' man utd team of the mid 90s, barely anyone has managed to bring through a big batch of players into their first teams.

what's really clear is that we can't continue to pay large fees (and sky-high wages) for established players over the long-term, we need young, fresh, hungry players. i still reckon hughes/rigg will buy a couple of people that we've never heard of for buttons and turn them into £5-10m players within a season or two.

There's no point comparing transfer dealings with clubs just promoted. Reason being their squads are much worse than ours to start with, hence they need to do more. Compare us to the likes of Villa, Norwich, Swansea, Everton, Stoke etc..... Haven't seen a huge amount of business done yet by those teams whereas we have brought in sold squad improvements and are clealy not finished.

I must admit I would have liked a few more signings like Diakite, Park and had he signed, Hoilett, but with the signings made in January, QPR have a decent squad. hopefully Fabio is good enough and will settle in quickly. Nelsen is a better option as cover than Hall was. If Helguson is fit, he will provide good cover or competition for Zamora. Johnson can make a good impact sub. Green is better than Kenny. Park showed last season that he can still play well and can score a few goals too. I am hopeful though that Hughes will buy 1 or 2 more players by the end of this month. Samba, you're or Gallas and maybe Defoe or Bellamy.
