  • SWP

I expecting nay demanding big things from the little man this season. On form he could make a huge impact on our season and hopefully under Hughes in a settled squad he will really turn it on for us.

Would you start with him or Mackie on the right?

    For me I'd go SWP.

I felt he was poor last season.. but personally im going to give him another chance to shine.. if he turns up like he did vs newcastle then happy days.

i think warnock and hughes playing him wide left really hindered him. he is a wide right winger, its the only place for him in our side.. that said mackie always came up with the goals / assist - even though somehow the official stats say SWP had most assists (personally i dont count a 4 yard pass to smith vs wigan as a proper assist)
Soldier: "im on reconnaissance sir.. im looking for our camouflage expert.. have you seen him?"
    Lovejoy: "No?!"
Soldier: "GOD DAMNIT THAT GUYS GOOD!"

I have a funny feeling he may well step up to the plate this season, and hopefully produce performances we all know he is capable of.

Like many, I'm not expecting much from him this year after last season where I thought he was very poor overall! If only his wonderful strike at home to WBA had of been correctly ruled onside maybe things would have been different for him but he seemed to lose confidence as the season went on! It would be great if he found form this season and was a viable wide attacking option for Hughes to use!

I think confidence really is a factor and I don't think our fans helped by getting on Shaun's back. I really hope he does have a good pre-season and come back into some sort of form because at his best he would be a very useful player to have in the squad.

First of all I would like to congratulate SpankwiR on upping the quality of his threads since yesterday......

I really hope that everyone is right about SWP this season.....for me, he was our most frustrating player last term and maybe starting with him and giving him a decent run might finally show what he has to offer.

The brutal answer to this question is no, he's not up to it because he is far too inconsistant. He probably the best example of a confidence player out there, the problem is this issue should have been dealt with years ago, that's where sports psychologists earn a crust. Too late now.

He was never proper Rs in the first place, meaning he doesn't look committed. Mackie is younger, faster, motivated and still improving.

                  I dunno about that.

You can't write people off that easilly. Confidence is a massive thing but things turn around. Torres was slated from all angles for his poor start at Chelsea, but he ended the season scoring in the Champions lge semi to beat Barca, then won the trophy, before winning the Euro's scoring in the final and grabbing the Golden boot in the process. With Drogba out the way and the likes of Hazard feeding throughballs to him i bet he scores hatfulls for them next season.

As for SWP, i have high hopes that he will start afresh under MH and have a good season. Form is temporary and all that.

Also, no way is mackie quicker than SWP. also you say Mackie is still improving etc so a better option... well when on form SWP is infinitely the better player.

SWP was one of the quickest at Man City. No way is Mackie faster. Hughes will pick people on talent and ability this season. We are not in a dog fight that requires effort and desire. Which means SWP over Mackie all day.

mackie is younger , stronger, has more desire, mentally tougher and scores goals. Why would you want SWP in front of him?

Because he cant do a step over and has no skill, that's all.

Thing is, Mackie is a potential foil for Cisse up front and for that role a bit of pace and positioning is worth more than a few step overs.

We would all love to see SWP on devastating form but I'm afraid the form book doesn't lie, even in his early days he had a reputation for being in and out. It may just be that if someone can finally help him get his head right, it'll work out. We're a bit weird in Blighty about a pro seeing any sort of trick cyclist - counsellor, shrink, psychologists, whatever - and yet in other sports it is more accepted. Is Dan Abrahams still at the club?
