  • Green, Nelsen and Andy Johnson all free... are we going to spend any money?

I'm curious as to what other posters take is on this. We've likely signed the three above all on free transfers. The only player we're odds-on the sign at this point and pay money for is Diakite (a bargain 3.2mil). This is in no way a complaint as (apart from Johnson) I think they're very good signings. I'm just wondering whether this is...

    a) A case of Mark Hughes making the best of a very limited budget
    b) An attempt to fill some gaps in the squad on the cheap, with another 3-4 players to come
    c) Just a case of Mark Hughes having a good eye for a bargain

Personally I lean towards option c, as I can't see us bringing anything in beyond a midfielder and at a stretch, a centre back. Although I would love a decent young striker, as we must have the oldest set of forwards in the Premier League.

They Are not free..the money that would normally be paid to a club is more likely to be paid as a signing on fee to the player

Am curious too. The optimistic view is Sparky is holding onto his money to splash out on a really good centre half and winger. The negative view is that he will sign Simpson on a free from Newcastle, move Onouha to centre back alongside Anton and on the wing rely on a combo of Mackie and SWP. My hunch is we will prob spend big-ish on one player but prob not the really big star name that those drooling over players in the Euro Championship are expecting. But its just guess work from all sides. The good news, either way, is with Green, Nelson and AJ we already have a considerably more solid squad of 25 than last season and a top keeper into the bargain.

Why spend on transfer fees if you can get what you want for free? Anyway just because a player costs us money doesn't guarantee a top performing pro.

              This
              Under Les Ferdinand:
Luke Freeman, top assists in the league: 4million
Alex Smithies, great goalie for this club: 3,5million
Charlie Austin, 19 Premier League goals: 4million
Jack Robinson: Contract ran out, left for free
              And many more mistakes

LES FERDINAND, IT'S TIME TO GO

Disagree with that approach. It stops many debates and chats, and the forum would be dead. Most fans like a bit of chat and love to speculate. It's what we all do.
Supporting QPR isn't just about a football team. It's about roots and identity.

Quite frankly, AJ, Nelson, and the England no.2 keeper all "on a free" is stunning business - and for us to be sustainable, we're going to see a lot more of these signings..... and I'm sure that Sparky will make sure that the quality is right up there.

I give you all an analogy to ponder:

I can fill my fridge and freezer with stuff from the 'duction cabnet in Tescos. It's all good stuff, it all tastes the same, yet it's a fraction of the price..... it's just that its got the stigma of a sell-by-date..... which is normally very conservative anyway. You just have to be selective. And what's more - the real good stuff like steak gets better with age!

Of course you are right, intelligent answer.I think Hughes has targets in mind and wants to get the freebies snapped up before someone else does,Along with Fabio I think all improve the squad, even AJ who could still be useful off the bench.Samba,Ireland and Yukubu are players Hughes is reported to want and if he got them we would have a strong squad going into next season, either way we will have a better squad than last term.

I personally think it demonstrates what a lack of common sense a lot of our fans have, the transfer window is not even officially open yet and the season doesn't even kick off for another two months.

I think it is perfect for our Club and should do the same every year until the youngsters start coming thro.
I mean get some freebies and may be couple of loans ( Personally do not like loans ) and one or two good additions that we have to pay for.
The free agents do get signing on fee but no way near the transfer would cost.
