This is what I think's going on with the transfers and stuff. For the first part of the window (or even before it..so now) Hughes is getting rid of the deadwood championship players, for example the likes of Hall, Shittu, Gabbidon, Vine...
And repleacing them with players with Premiership experience e.g. Nelsen, AJ. I reckon they will just be used as squad players and will not play too much. I mean who would you want in our 25 man squad as backup, Hall or Nelsen?? In order to establish ourselves in the Premier League we need to look like a Prem club have a Premiership squad.

Later on in the transfer window is when I think some of the serious business will be done and where we'll make changes to our starting xi. Some of the names mentioned on here e.g. Moses, Samba, and even that £10m-rated Bordeoux leftback, will be the sort of players we'll probably be after by then.

For now though it's just about putting Premiership experience into our 25 man squad, and then later on we may start spending millions on top players.

Seems realistic. Wonder how big his transfer kitty is, he must have been promised a quite big one in order to get him here in the first place.

That's what I was also thinking. I reckon he'll be given at least £10-£15m.

I'd be happy if Mittal donated the loose change from the back of his sofa, which should amount to about £100m.

Long, long way to go in this transfer window. There are also a lot of players that are on the market engaged in the European Championships. I think we will see a lot of movement in the transfer market when players start coming home from the Euros. I also think what the OP was saying about Hughes having a combination of free transfer targets and big money signings is probably correct, I just wonder how deep the boards pockets are in this transfer window.

The key word in that post is toward the end of the last sentence: "may". None of us knows. If we bring in Diakite, Taiwo (or someone of similar quality), Samba and Mosses then the Johnsons and the Nelson's look like really useful squad buys and it will have been a fantastic window that will go along way to establish ourselves a force in the Prem. If, however, we bring in Bentley and a couple of fairy average plyers instead then it will look like the board has decided to curtail its spending. At this stage the window could go either way. Not sure you can bring the Euros into it tho: Hughes has said he is not scouting there and knows who is targets are, suggesting to me they are slightly lesser English players and prob a few Africans.

Yep, and an increased wage bill to sign the freebies he already talked to, Andy Johnson, Nelsen, I guess.
