I like this quote from Rednapp in that Article above (which was only from 28 March this year!)
"Redknapp was full of praise for Nelsen's performance and compared his influence at the club to that of Scott Parker. "I thought he was fantastic tonight," the Spurs manager said. "I just think he is a great professional and a real good player.
"I couldn't believe I got him on a free. I felt it was an amazing player to bring to the club, he is a player I have chased for years. I have always thought he was top class, a great pro, a great trainer, a fantastic person.
"He has got a six-month contract. At the end of the season you have got to keep him here next year because he's worth his weight in gold just to have around for other people to look at the way he works, the way he trains, the way he behaves, his attitude.
"That's what football clubs are built upon, people like him, Scott Parker, Brad Friedel. You bring them in and it changes everything. That has been the difference this year."
Mark Hughes has also said that's why he liked Dyer. Perhaps some are underestimating the positive influence having the right people around the place for the other six days a week when we don't see them. Of course...you don't need that on FIFA12 do you?

If this is true i have no problem with Nelson at all. He was class for Blackburn and MH knows him.
Also i dont think mentioned, but this could be another piece of the jigsaw to attract Samba to the club..... I assume they played together and formed a good partnership. It makes sense if looking for 2 CB's to get ones with an understanding of eachoother's games already so it makes it easier to only adapt to playing with the existing 2.
If true he's getting Joihnson, part of that will be he knows thet he and Zamora can play together and already have an understanding and it won't take 10 games together to click. Given he will only be an impact player when used or Cisse injured / rested / suspended, we need them to hit the ground running as a pair, same for defences.....

We can make all the excuses we want, but Nelson is what, 35? Harry had him a while back and pace goes fast when you get to your mid 30s.
Nelson, Johnson - ageing journeymen, and by the way, no transfer is ever really free.
I don't want the club to make unrealistic signings at inflated prices, but I'd sooner bring in fresh young blood and give that a go then plug gaps caused by other mediocre signings.

All a question of balance I suppose.
There's two extremes in people's minds when it comes to transfers these days: on one hand West Ham a few years ago (and still today) lashing out huge contracts on Premiership "experience", and on the other Newcastle last season doing their research and finding canny bargains from abroad. Or Bartons versus Diakites if you like.
Nelsen I don't think is a mercenary sort to be fair - a good honest experienced pro, solid backup and certainly the sort of bloke you want next to Ferdinand or Onuoha. Trouble is, I thought that's what we already had in Clint Hill.
With the 25 man squad rule however there's only so much "backup" you can have before you realise someone has to be considered first team. Ferdinand, Nelsen, Onuoha, Hill suggests to me there'll be no Chris Samba this summer unfortunately.
It could be that Hughes' international recruitment strategy is taking a back seat this summer.
