  • Played their part: 4 Shaun Derry

"Here at www.qpr.co.uk we take a look at the players who were involved in last season's successful fight against relegation …

    Shaun Derry
    Appearances (all competitions): 32
    Goals: 1
    Assists: 0

Shaun Derry clearly doesn't read footballing scripts. If he did, he would have seen that he was too old for the Championship last season. And he was definitely too old for the Premier League last term. And that if Liverpool are 2-0 up with less than 15 minutes to go, the game is over.

The 34 year-old proved all of the above wrong.

Everyone is well aware of his commitment, his passion and his strength in the tackle but Derry also displayed an ability in possession last season for which he is rarely given credit.

And on top of his leadership skills which proved absolutely crucial to our survival last season, he even managed to score his first goal for QPR. In fact, it was his first goal for more than five years!

With Rangers trailing Liverpool 2-0 at Loftus Road and the stadium scoreboard reading 77 minutes, Derry headed home Adel Taarabt's corner. At the time it was merely seen as a small consolation on a night to forget. It proved to be the catalyst for a game which will be forever remembered.

The R's stunned the Reds with two more goals, winning the match 3-2. It is seen by many - Mark Hughes included - as the turning point in Rangers' season. Prior to Derry's header, QPR were sliding back into the Championship without a fight.

By the end of the match, the battle had begun. And it was a battle Rangers - and Derry - would win."
