Someone at work just asked me a question and, I've got to be honest, I haven't got a clue. If JB isn't named in the 25 man squad at the start of the season (meaning he wouldn't have been able to play anyway), do the 12 games count? Or is it only when he would have been available?

Question re JB/25 man squad

Thats an interesting take on it in all fairness.. however, I would assume that the FA would be complete W ANKERS if they said it didnt count. Because whats the point in adding him to the squad knowing full well he cant play. therefore leaving him out is exactly the same.. surely?

Becoming more and more obvious that people don't read posts properly on here! Look harder people!!!
A very good question but one I do not have answer to either....although would assume his ban would still count. First 12 games whilst he is contracted at a club and that club begins it's season.

I would imagine he'd still be named in the 25 anyway, as there's plenty of games between his ban ending and the end of the season. Enough to make it worth while effectively having a 24 man squad till then. The squad is only finalised at the end of August if I recall correctly? That's 3-4 games before it's an issue.
There's a good argument that Barton's ban must be served in games where he's available. And if he isn't in the squad, he isn't.

Hooray! Someone understood the question
I guess the conundurum is, if he's not in the squad, then he's not available for selection. If he's not available for selection, then does the 12 game ban kick in?
I suspect it does, but it really wouldn't surprise me if the FA said he had to be included in teh squad for them to countLast edited by Jase; 24-05-2012, 04:19 PM.

True but, injury notwithstanding, he is in the squad and available for selection.
Worth saying that the 25 man squad rule is relatively new, so other players who have been banned for long periods (Cantona/DiCanio etc) would still have been squad members.

Having said that, if this does end up being the ruling you can put all your money on it being the last straw that ends JB's career with QPR

If we didn't name him in the 25 and the FA then said his ban won't start till he was named, that is punishing QPR not Joey, because we would have to compete with other teams who have the full squads, which would therefore put as at an unfair disadvantage.
Eric cantona got a 9 month ban from playing which 4 months of was taken up with the summer

True, and I'm not trying to be argumentative (honest), but while he isn't allowed to play in reserve games, they don't count towards his ban. Only first team games do.
I genuinely don't know the answer to this and, I suspect, neither do the FA (useless bunch of twunts).
