  • Couldn't make it up -re Ramage

A first post from me - though I read the board daily - but felt I had to share my experience from yesterday.
As a long suffering Rangers fan who gets much less chance to go to matches now, I really like to get the best out of the experience. No season ticket for me these days, so I end up sitting with all sorts of different fans. Yesterday my patience was growing thin- like everybody else if truth were told. Anyway, the guy next to me had clearly decided that Peter Ramage ("Damage") was to blame for absolutely everything ill in the world and took great delight in shouting abuse at him from the beginning of the second half (peter was on our side of the pitch and we were sat near enough to the front of Ellerslie to be audible).
Now, I have always felt that no true supporter should verbally abuse his own team - it can only make the player play worse and you get into a viscous cycle likely to bring defeat - so I found myself increasingly annoyed. However, if you pay your money you presumably have the right to express an opinion, and my fellow supporter may well have seen enogh of Ramage's performances last season to be better qualified to give an opinion on his capabilities than myself- so I kept quiet for as long as I could stand it.
However, I eventually snapped, as Ramage was clearly playing well. Much to the embarrasment of my son and his friends, I requested that the Ramage baiter stopped his behaviour, as I , for one, wanted us to win the game, and hiskind of negative abuse was more likely to lose it for us. Needless to say, my new "friend" did not take kindly to this suggestion, and things began to become uncomfortable. I therefore decided to suggest that we forget our dieagreement and get on with supporting the team. The Ramage baiter was still unhappy, but I managed to calm down and "let it lie" -until the Man of the match was announced- none other than Peter Ramage! I felt I should infrom my adversary that maybe he should think again, I was obviuosly not mad - others thought the sane as me. and then,as you know the unbelievable. We get our late equaliser and Ramage has scored. An explosion of ecstacy in Ellerslie -accept for my new "friend", who refused to celebrate the goal, sat on his seat in utter disbelief and frustration shaking his head.
So here I am - Mr Smuggins - proved right.
In the cold light of day I am left wondering about why some people go to football matches. This gentleman clearly got more pleasure from moaning, cat-calling and criticising his tream than he did from a "wonder" goal. Some people are never happy -that's presumably why he supports Rangers!
By the way, I thought Borrowdale had a good game too!

That sort of thing happens too much at Rangers, maybe it does at other grounds too. Really don't know why some of these people go?
I had a similar situation at the Ipswich game last year when a bloke was booing Mahon. I asked him why he thought it was a good idea to boo his own team? He said "I'm NOT booing the TEAM, I'm booing MAHON!" - As if I was gonna say "Oh fair enough then".
I think some of these people just need someone that they can shout abuse at, safe in the knowledge that the victim will not be able to have a go back. I suppose by getting MOTM and scoring, Ramage did get his own back though!

Exactly the same thing that applies to Ramage should apply to Helguson and Agyemang. However poor their form might be at the time, with a tight ground like ours its imperative we get behind them and keep showing them unconditional support. Otherwise you just create a self-fulfilling prophecy as this post perfectly highlights. Joe Hylton on the last Pete Latest encouraged us all to get behind Ramage this season - I would urge us to extend that call to the entire team, in particular those like above who are out of form. As long as they where the great blue and white hoops they are OUR players representing OUR great club and they need us as "SUPPORTERS". I have never bought this argument that I've paid for my ticket and that gives me a right to boo and give out abuse. Its short-sighted because it can ONLY have a detrimental effect, therefore they cannot in all honesty see themselves as true supporters. And whilst we're on the subject of negative supporters, I keep hearing this "I'd much rather be negative because then if things go wrong I wont be disappointed". What a lame attitude!!! Imagine if you applied that kind of mindset to every other aspect of your life?! The whole point about supporting your team is the rollercoaster of emotions it inevitably produces. Don't be a half-hearted fan, be whole-hearted and make yourself truly proud to be one.

Last season we lost home against Ipswich 1-3 and I was watching the game at home in Kuwait. I remember Mahon had a bad game and I was so angry shouting and booing him, but remember, I am home not at the game. On the other hand, some fans were booing every touch he made which never helps. what I am trying to say is If you want to boo a QPR player, then it is better not to come to the game but you still can boo him through your TV. Booing at the ground does not help at all.

IMO Ramage was solid in defence last season and got alot of unfair stick! Ok i admit his passing was laughable more often then most but he made up for that with some of the challenges made! Yesterday he had a good game where he was solid in defence and if im not mistaken he took on the left back in the first and his pass nearly led to a goal! He put a couple of good crosses in as well and was always looking to get into space down the right he only made 1 or 2 miss placed passes/crosses which one was the goal which he deserved! Hopefully yesterdays performance would silence some of the people that see everything bad as his fault and get behind him and cheer on the Rangers!
Would luv to hear the crowd get behind him with maybe a positive song or something!

On another note on the negativity against out players was against Tarrabt, ok i agree he was trying a bit to hard to do it all himself wen he should have maybe passed there was some bloke in P-Upper having a proper 5 minute spell of non-stop abusive shouting i thought this blokes head was gonna pop as i dont think he stopped for breathe! where as i agree about Tarrabt needing to pass more i felt some of the things said were unneccessary.
We need to get behind the team not abuse them!
Why cant we all just get along ;)
In 'Arry and Fernandes we trust

Yousef you are crazy guy yes?

I have shouted at the TV many, many times, but BOOING at the set?

I have also never tried slow-handclapping the computer when it won't load but I might give it a go.

                        Well done, Worton Ranger.

Those sorts need to be told. Ramage always gives 100%, and seems to be settling in London now.

                        Welcome to the board.

I'm a big fan of Ramage and feel he deserved his bit of luck yesterday. I loved the way he celebrated too, albeit fairly reserved.

I had the same thing with Mahon last season... might be the same bloke. R Block?

Anyway, later in the season he scored (Mahon) and the bloke didn't celebrate, just shook his head.

                              Takes all sorts I suppose.

(Mind you, booing at the telly takes some beating in the Mental Stakes)
