  • Why the over reaction?

24 hours ago i was convinced Wigan and ourselves would beat the drop. A Wigan win changes nothing!! All this talk of 3 wins blah blah blah! 6 points will be enough and 4 could very well be.

If we get 4 points, Blackburn will have to get 7 points out of Norwich & Wigan (h) and Spurs & Chelsea (a), not happening.

Suddenly Bolton have turned into Barca (judging comments on here). They're poor, very poor. Throw into the mix 6 games in 22 days at the end of a mentally draining season and it's extremely tough.

They have home games against a Swansea side who'll want to win every game from now until the end of the season to finish as high as possible. A big pitch at the Reebok will suit the Swans. Spurs again should dominate on the big pitch at the Reebok and challenging for 4th place. WBA are the last team to travel to the Reebok and this is a game i feel Bolton will win, it depends if WBA are on the beach or not.

Bolton travel to Villa, simply a massive game. If Villa lose they're bang in trouble although we will all be Villa fans for that game. A visit to Sunderland is next up. Sunderland have started to have a drop in performances, i expect O'Neill to put this right and will be desperate to finish as high as possible, with Europe still a possibility. Bolton finish off their season with a trip to Stoke. Not the biggest game in the world but Stoke hate losing at home and the Stoke fans will take deep pleasure in sending Bolton down, no doubt about that.

It's hard to predict the outcome of games and strange results get thrown up all over the place. I do believe though that Bolton won't pick up more than 3 points at home (WBA) and a max of 3 away (Villa). That gives them 35 points and a worse goal difference.

4 points will be enough in my opinion, i'd rather 6 to be safe though

That's an awful lot of if's.
If you're right, I'll be very happy.

You make some good points. I have to say that after WBA on Saturday I thought we had a massive task. Your right in the fact that Wigan's win last night doesn't really change anything for us, our task is still huge and the target is ultimately 6 points from 4 games.

My gut feeling is that Bolton will go on a run and pick up points.... making them and Wigan safe.

I think it's the 2 games in hand that Bolton have that's getting everyone panicky.

Excellent thread title and OP Matty.

At the moment some posters are running for the hills when the real battle for survival is yet to commence.

Zulu would have been a very short film if lieutenant Bromhead had said f*** this for a game of soldiers as soon as he heard the zulu rattler approaching.

Bolton are the big unknown factor as they haven't played for a while and have games in hand. Let's see the whites of their eyes before making any hasty calls of raising the white flag of relegation.

Let's all get behind our whole team for the run in.

If more than anything this last week has taught us that the premier league like the game itself is unpredictable. think back to the 70th minute vs the bin dippers, we looked down and out then.

whether you get behind the team or not makes no difference your just like everyone else...a spectator. Lets see if our lot have the bottle to do some damage in the last 4 games as for much of the season and the game the other day against West Brom they have blown it.

Andy Gray on relegation battle and who'll be joining Wolves in the Championship:

Keys and Gray seem to agree with you...

I can see it going right to the last game with 3 or 4 teams dipping in and out of the 2, (Wolves already gone), relegation places all afternoon.

                      good, well-argued points.

although i wasn't convinced that us and wigan that would stay up, i was very hopeful of that. i'm still fairly hopeful, but wigan's win changes the psychology on bolton a bit. now that it feels like a two-horse race to avoid the last relegation slot (if blackburn now manage to finish above either team, then that team deserves to go down), i feel less certain.

bolton aren't great, but it's probably clearer in their heads what they need to do now - get 3 points more from 6 games than we manage to get in 4 games.

i'm still worried about them managing to grind out a freak win or two (villa are shocking at the moment, but will probably avoid getting sucked into this battle - but they shouldn't be too hard to beat). i'm also nervy about what to do with cisse against spuds, i'd like us to stick with the 4-5-1 that worked against a***nal and swansea so well, even though he's probably our best chance of a goal (for the other matches, i think 4-4-2 with dc and bz up front will work better).

still think 7 points from the next four is possible and will be enough to survive.

I think you are spot on. But the two games can also put too much pressure on them. At least if they lose the first one.
Anyway, they have an slightly physcological advantage before the matches are played.

Don't think the situation has changed really, two more wins, 6 points should do it...
