Agreed Dando, but with our fickle support, you can guarantee that if we did sign Beckford, just one poor first touch in his first game would be enough to cause an instant outpouring of criticism as to why we've signed an unproved League 1 player with no CCC experience etc etc etc

I'd have thought Madge/Gorman wouldn't have signed Pellicori (despite the Paladini conspiracy theories) if he couldn't give us something different. And I'm absolutely certain that £4m for Beckford would be a more spectacular gamble (which would have far more serious repercussions all around the club if it went wrong) than the minimal amount we've spent on Pellicori.

there is no guanrentee Beckford can step up a level though, he is just as unproven as Pellicori and the same for Cox. Look at Eastwood, scored goals for fun in the lower leagues for Southend but he can't do it in the championship!! So lets just all agree that signing Beckford, Cox and Pellicori are all gambles for a championship/prem club and we'll see what happens...

Faulin and Peccorelli are not rated in their own countries. You can base a relatively solid judgement on the clubs they've played for and the media interest generated in their home country. The Inter fans I've spoken to have never heard of Faulin either....

To reverse the situation for illustrative purposes, these transfers would be akin to Pescara or Ancona buying Nick Bailey or Gareth McAuley for £3.5m. Or Argentinos Juniors taking Gareth Taylor on a 3 year deal.

        Nonsensical

Paul - I wasn't trying to build up Pellicori in my post - like you probably, I've never seen him play. (Although if he turns out to be a great player, I will then wish I was his agent).

My point is that you are welcome to an opinion (as are we all) but how can you have any opinion, let alone a comparative one about a player you've never seen? Even in your last post you say "I don't care how good or bad Pellicori is, but Beckford is better". So if Pellicori were Marco Van Basten standard, or Wayne Rooney standard, Beckford is still better?

Pete, is this your v diplomatic way of telling us to forget Lita because you've been tipped off we can't afford a "big name"?

mikechaj - In 95% of cases, football is really simple and by the age of 28, you are where you are for a reason and that reason is because that is your level. Yes there are a few freaks (5%), but I am willing to safely say he will not be one as he has been passed over all his career.

If Pellicori were Marco Van Basten or Wayne Rooney standard, he would not have been playing in the 2nd Division in Italy and he would be in the scouts note books for all the top clubs in Europe and would not be at W12 on a trail.

Did Rooney go to Man U for a trial, Did Ronaldo go to Real Madrid for a trial, the answer is no so if Pellicori was such a talent at scoring goals, why was he on trial at QPR and not signed.

Also, would Beckford have a trial at QPR before he was signed ?

It seems we get sucked into believing these players are quality, but is it more to do with the mass media of football we have in this country? I keep seeeing lets sign Vignol, is that based on where he has been in terms of his CV of clubs and not how he has actually played in the last two games?
Firstly we have a fair idea of how they rated in their own countries through the media.

Its a good job we don't judge Borrowdale on his CV as he would never get a game ;D

im not really bothered about Beckford - but someone like Lita would fill me with confidence. I agree that some fans do jump to conlcusions as soon as a player plays badly - but thats where i think a proven player will have its advantage, as fans will give them more time. If we sign an unknown player and he plays crap - our fans will be left thinking hes another waste of space. However if we sign lita and he has a bad debut, i think people will still be confident he will be sucessful.

If Pellicori is the only striker we'll get before the season starts lets see how he does....tbh I was hopeful of a quality striker coming in before the start of the season but beggars can't be choosers i guess.
My worry is if HH and Dave get injured...we'll be abit thin up top. Big season for Balanta.

He won't be peanuts in January. He'll be cheaper but not peanuts! There will be a que of clubs wanting him because in January he will be worth the punt. Now he comes with too much baggage for the price tag he is currently carrying.

Dando - 'on paper' I'd agree with you about Lita. But I have to say he was completely useless for Reading last season at Loftus Road. Lazy, slow, little movement and mouthy to his teammates. I remember thinking how lucky we were that we hadn't signed him!!

agree he wasnt good against us last year, but we could say that about anyone. Taraabt has been pretty crap in pre season, but we know hes good, Mancienne got torn apart against us last year, but we cant judge by that. Lita is a known goal scorer - and would greatly give me confidence with the amount of chances we are creating.

Why a "big name"? Well we would all like to see QPR as "big club" again and big clubs have big name players - simples!!!!

yeah big names dont guarantee success but it could increase ticket sales, bigger crowds could mean louder crowds, generates a feel good factor among fans and more optimism. then of course big names *normally* are known for their ability but would say a supporter of a serie b team know of someone like beckford? or even lita? im thinking no, would they know pellicori, im thinking yes. so lets just see how he gets on, im sure if we did go up, he wouldnt be able to play prem level but if he can fire us up thats all that matters
