  • FA will back Premier League star who admits to being gay

The FA have pledged full support for the first Barclays Premier League player to break football's final taboo and openly admit to being gay. Justin Fashanu remains the only player in the history of English football to 'come out'.

The FA are just great aren't they?

    "Opening Doors and Joining In"

Hardly the best name for such an initiative. Sounds like a game that might be played at the local all male sauna.

I was thinking about this debate the other day, I reckon there must be quite a few players in the Premiership gay.

I think it's amazing they have kept it a secret this far!

I wonder if any publicity-crazed pro' would hedge their bets and admit to being "a bit Bi"?

Most of us would have the 'So what?' attitude as the FA is hoping, but there is very obviously plenty of fans that are either too ignorant or childish to treat these players with anywhere approaching respect.

The article makes it clear that they aren't looking for gay players to out, but they want to get to a stage where it can happen, and the vast majority will shrug, and hopefully the remaining children will be shamed into keeping their mouths shut.

I still get the feeling that there are elements of the footballing infrastructure that would find it fairly difficult to cope with, but that element will diminish over time. It may be a long time off, but more power to any player brave enough to come out. It should absolutely have to be his choice however, no-one should be making that decision for him.
