  • ‘Astounded’ Hughes takes beleaguered team abroad – Tuesday diary

Manager Mark Hughes said he was "astounded" by how bad QPR were in the first half at Blackburn on Saturday and vowed to put his team through a gruelling week of training in Portugal this week.

I was. Look at our team on paper, that's a mid table premier league side at worst. I was shocked at our first half performance against Blackburn, with the players we have that should never have happened.

Baring a handful of games this season we didnt start to play the game until around the 60th minute. Blackburn is a prime example of this, we need more first half performances like Man City, Wolves (away) and Chelsea and we will stay up.

My expectations aren't high at all mate. I said at the start of the season that 17th is the aim and is good enough for me. I said it again after we signed Barton swp Ferdinand etc and was slated for it. But look at the team we have, on paper would you not say that is a team that is more than capable of finishing mid table?
Even though we have strengthened in January I still say I would be happy with 17th, anything more is a bonus.

The best performances this season have ended in defeat, with the exception of the Wolves game. Man City being the most obvious example.

I remember posting at the time (after the win v Chelsea) that I watched a different game to all the other QPR fans as I thought we were utterly shocking. Yes, we gave it some for the opening minutes, as you should in a game like that, but were extremely lucky to get 3 points against 9 men who totally outplayed our 11.

I think Mark Hughes is trying to distance himself (to an extent) from the performance. However, most teams can claim to have a run of form when a new manager is appointed, even if they are not his players. So you can look at things both ways.

He has to take responsibility as he is the manager, the motivator, the tactician and all th rest of it.

I think there is somthing wrong at the club because our team IS better than this on paper. And just to be controversial and upset you all - I think that the problem may just have something to do with our Captain.

If this is true how come we have lost so many games from winning position.

I was also extremely disppointed with QPR's performance against Chelsea, so much so that I switched off the TV for the last 15 minutes. It was embarrassing watching their 9 men have so much possession and in dangerous areas.

QPR have got some players with a good amount of Premiership experience in the likes of Young, Ferdinand, Gabbidon, Barton, SWP, Helguson, Traore and now Zamora and Onuoha and Cisse when he gets back, yet they are not performing well enough.

This lot should have formed the basis of a decent Premiership side, but for some reason (Warnock's coaching or tactics?) have not done so.

We can all put some blame on some dodgy official decisons i.e. Villa, WBA, Norwich & Wolves (Cisse deserved his red, but so did Johnson for his challenge from behind), but in truth, most of the problems have been self inflicted.

Hopefully this two week break will see some intense training sessions and a lot of pracrice on shooting, crossing, defending and attacking set pieces and more importantly, keeping possession, shape and discipline.

QPR need to target winning 5 or 6 of the remaining games with a few draws too.

I was absolutely astounded. If we had started like the second half we would have strolled that game. We had 60% of the play and 25 chances, most of which must have been in the second half.

Manager needs to do his half time talk before the game starts next time then.
