If I remember people were thinking Tevez might be coming so Defoe is a reasonable target to enquire about

Would rather keep our current strikers then have AJ take one of there places
    That's exactly how I'm thinking.

I'm not interested in "looking serious" or "showing our intent" (whatever that means) - I'm far more interested in making serious offers for players we have a better than 50/50 chance of signing. For me those are Alex/ Santa Cruze/ Hoillet/ Onouha and poss N'Zogbia.
Forgive me for being naive but I honestly think we have a chance with a player like JD mate. For such a natural goal scorer he's hardly ever talked about as ever being wanted by anyone which I find astonishing & I believe we would be a great club for him. Star player, regular games, no doubt he will bring goals & good money why shouldn't we go for it? As you know I'm one of the more realistic posters on this board but I feel this could happen & as mellow said a good point, why would they sell to a v v close rival?.

Defoe is also a player that handed in a transfer request when West Ham were relegated to Championship....

And you think Barton, Faurlin, Taarabt, not to mention if we got them Alex, Onouha etc wouldn't do the same?

To e fair to Baron, hedidn't at Newcastle so that's a little harsh. Adel did his bit there and wants to move on, so he's a certainty. Ali, like Alex Defoe...Well who could blame them. Ohouha is a player I think you'd have a slight chance of keeping if you could persuade Barton and the likes to stay, as. If we're a way off at the half way stage in the NPC, then they'll be straight off. Again, who can blame them?!

Anyway, let's hope we sort something soon as it's looking bleak right now.
              Your mum would love me...

Off out on the school run chaps so happy debating but personally feel we ABSOLUTELY NEED a goal scorer who actually scores or we are knee deep in the doo doo & a serious bid for one of those two would be a big step in showing us how serious the board are.

                Toodle pip for now.

Mate, if we sign him I will give you the biggest man-hug ever (whether you want one or not). No problem with us testing the water if there is some chance but what I wd hate to see wd be lots of p*ssing about trying to sign him for a fortnight and then on transfer deadline day having to sign Andy useless Johnson (or Jason pensioner Roberts) at some way over the odds price and seeing Jol and Fayed laughing all their way to the bank. As long as meanwhile we are also testing the water for Santa Cruze/ Zamora/ Kenwyne Jones then fine.

no im saying why would he want to come to a bottom 3 club with so few decent players if he has the opportunity to go elsewhere for same money? He wont play championship football and you cant blame him...
I would love him here but him and Darren Bent are a league above us in player terms at the moment....
Maybe if we spend big and he saw other players of quality coming to the club but just cant see us spending too much or Defoe wanting to fight a relegation battle.

I'm not sure why people are convinced Defoe would want to go to Liverpool..... He's frustrated at Spurs because he's warming the bench, which is exactly what he'll do at Liverpool.

Suarez will always be first choice, and often they play one up with gerrard in the hole, or a 3 up frot with Downing one side and maybe Henderson the other. Then you have the court jester Carroll, who will stay and Dalglish will need to play more often than not to save face after wasting £35m on him.

I only see Defoe as back up to Suarez if he goes there....

Also for those who say the idea of us attracting him is impossible are a little forgetful. He has no better pedigree than SWP, who was a fringe player at a top 4 club and came to us for 1st team football...... identical situation to Defoe, so never say never.

That said i, i would be surprised if he came to us, mainly as i don't see Spurs selling this window. HR went to look at the striker in France the other night and he scored 2, so good chance they'll bid for him which may mean releasing one striker if they sign him, but not sure it would be Defoe.....?

been reported we've been offered him but the deafening silence which followed suggests we aren't interested.

as for defoe, regardless of whether he would want to come - lets agree to disagree - is there any indication that harry has the slightest intention of selling?

Harry has said he's not for sale in every interview ive heard last couple of weeks but who knows? all down to Defoe to kick up a stink if he wants to leave

Harry said Crouch wasn't for sale for any amount of money 3 weeks before he sold him to Stoke. He's the shrewdest manager around & will do what's needed for clubs to pay top dollar.
