  • Our board need to dig deep!

I keep hearing 'ambition' and we need to maintain premier league status to achieve it, well the answer is simple, we need to break the bank and sign quality players at all costs yet TF is saying we won't pay over the odds. I'm sorry Tony but if you want to keep premier league status you're going to have to invest and pay over the odds this month, you'll recoup it in May when we survive. If not, i wouldn't even begin work on Warren Farm because we'll be relegated.

It's time to put bids in that are acceptable, 2 bids for Samba and not even a negotiation point, flatly rejected. 3 bids for Alex and we're not far off. Alex could have played today if we hadn't arsed around with 3 unacceptable bids.

Wigan at home next week is simply do or die, anything less than 3 points and it's over for me. We need fresh faces and quick.

Our squad isn't capable of staying in the league. When we get injuries/suspensions we have a championship squad.

Kenny hasn't been the same since Stoke, todays goal was a joke from a goalkeeping point of view, Best was only going to put it in one place, so Kenny dived the opposite way! Cerny back in for me for Wigan. A goalkeeper isn't a priority signing though.

Defensively we need 2 CB's and a LB.

Midfield, we need an attacking winger, a creative midfielder and a defensive midfielder.

    We need two strikers.

Judging by the players linked, these below would improve us massively.

Alex, Samba, Onouha and Bridge (loan) - 3 of them 4 would improve us immensely.

    Pienaar, Ireland, Mulumbu

    Henrique (loan) and Defoe.

I'd say the rough cost of the above permanent signings would be around the 40-45m mark.

    Kenny/Cerny
    Young/Onouha, Alex, Samba, Bridge/Traore
    SWP Barton Mulumbu Pienaar
    Henrique/Taarabt
    Defoe

The spine of that side is very very strong, all for 45m and we could have a comfortable side for premiership survival. As well as a half decent bench.

A lot of money but it would guarantee survival and also build a hugely strong base for future seasons and keep spending at a low key level in future transfer windows with only a couple of additions here and there.

I think and hope the board will do things sensibly, and not get pushed into panic buying..

        A few problems:

        First - find your £50m

Second - persuade a lot of clubs to part with good players instantly

Third - persuade a lot of good players to join a club that might be in the Championship next year

Fourth - get them all tied up before Wigan

Every transfer window seems a panic for us and we are still paying the cost (Vine, etc). If we can't get the right players then maybe we just have to hold our hands up rather than leave us saddled with huge debt and a massive, rubbish squad.

Was speaking to a director of another smallish prem club the other day and he said going down and hoovering up the parachutte payment then back up a much stronger club had actually worked out really well for them. I know it isn't what any of us want but that way need not spell total disaster - massive debts and yet more rubbish player could.

Swansea and Norwich have proven so far you don't need to blow the bank to on fees and 80k a week players to compete and put a few noses out of joint in the Premier League. Unfortunately we're at a stage where we can't take a risk on untried player or those 'with something to prove'.

Conversely we've got to have cplayers who have character and can turn it on week in week out and be prepared to scrap us out of this position and be here for the long haul. At the opposite end of the spectrum I'd be loathe to see players like Ireland come in who represent the bloated, detatched from reality breed of footballer the Premier League has produced. Hasn't done anything at Villa in 2 years, can't string a sentence together (anyone recall the debacle of the two dead grannies as he attempted to explain going AWOL from his national team before a game?) but leads the lifestyle of a tasteless aristocrat and would expect the same kind of salary in the hope he can produce form he showed a few years ago before he became a megastar in his own mind.

TF's investment is worthless if we get relegated. Our turnover (exclusing parachute payments) in the Championsip is £2m so the sums of us going down mean that TF and Mittal would have to bankroll us at massive losses it is in their interests to spend big to prevent losing even more.

I might be wrong but the first year in the Championship, you get the same payout as in the premiership.

I agree stainrod assuming we can keep Hughes and the
Nucleus of the team also assuming the board stay, did the world of good for Newcastle and west ham look like they may do it
The trick is not to have good championship players but good pl players
Whose qualities over time will tell , it will tell a
Lot of the likes of Barton young swp Ferdinand traore and any other pl players we may sign decide thy wanna stay and help get us back

We try to do it ala leicester etc with championship players could
Be there for another 15 yers

Maybe TF & Phil Beard need to realise a 40,000 seater stadium is not needed for any other division apart from the premiership - and only for decent top ten teams at that.
My idea would be to hold back any stadium plans yet & spend it on players to keep us in this league - i mean its taken us 15 fkn years to get back there, lets not ruin it at our first attempt.

Training ground & academy ok push with those plans, as these are needed to attract players in my eye, but lets not have a lovely stadium for a lower division, too many clubs have done this!

Re your last sentence - tell that to Portsmouth, Leeds, Forest etc and all the other clubs who gambled everything on staying up - completely crippled for a generation.

This year is also the first time parachute payments have been extended to 4 years , so we wil have distinct advantage over a lit of other teams

Agree with Matty if we are arguing with Cheshit over say 500k that is crazy need to pay it , those 3 points at Wigan may pay it back very quickly

Serious rebuilding will come in the summer. Hopefully Onuoha, Bridge, Samba and/or Alex can be had for the right price. Mulumbu or Diame would also be a good shout, and it looks like Henrique is coming. Pienaar and Defoe would be nice but I don't see Spurs selling either until the summer.
