  • Blackstock

He gets a lot of stick from fans but how does his record compare with other strikers:

    Blackstock's record:
    2008/09 - League Stats
    Started: 32 matches
    Appeared as Sub: 10 matches
    Total Minutes: 2842
    Goals: 13
    Minutes per Goal: 219

Playing 2842 minutes out of a possible 4140 is 68% as a comparison Tommy Smith played 3864 (or 93%) and scored just 4 goals more. If Blackstock had kept his minutes per goal ratio and had played the same amount of minutes as Smith did he would have scored 17. If he had played every minute of the season and scored at the same ratio he would have finished the season with 19 goals.

The stats may show he didn't/wouldn't score 20 goals a season but what the stats don't show is the following:

    * Played for two different clubs in 08/09
    * Played under four different managers Dowie, Ainsworth, Sousa and Davies in 08/09
    * Didn't play in a consistent 4-4-2 formation or with a consistent strike partner or team in 08/09

Players like McCormack, Ebanks-Blake, Doyle etc played under the same manager and played in a consistent formation and team.

One thing the stats will show though is that his goals per minute ratio (219) is better than the following players who all scored more or equal amounts of goals in 08/09:

    Hulse - 237
    Smith - 227
    Tudgay - 265
    Bailey - 292
    Gallagher - 243

Blackstock's goal per minute ratio was also better than the following players who scored fewer goals than him:

    Parkin - 235
    Boothroyd - 240
    Paterson - 271
    Maynard - 267
    Morrison - 360
    McGoldrick - 324

For a player who is described as "lazy" or "woeful" his record is much better than many others in this league.

Agreed, but he is now gone.

I'd be interested to know how his record compares with Lita or Evans or any other striker we cd now sign.

I know you did Benny and so do I.

225 mins is a goal every 2½ matches so 219 is a decent record. Even more so when compared with other strikers in this league.

Lita has made 60 championship appearances scoring 22 times at a goal every 209 minutes. If he played all 46 matches and appeared for the full 90 minutes at each and continued his goal every 209 minutes he would average 19.8 goals a season.

Evans scored 10 goals in 28 championship appearances at a rate of a goal every 183 minutes. Over the course of a season equals 22.6 goals (if he played a full 46 match season).

Many thanks indeed sir pie for taking the trouble 2 work that out.

Moral seems 2 b: dexter was more effective than he looked but for a shade less money (evans) or a free transfer (lita, albeit with some hard wage negotiations) we cd have a striker who is even better.

True but I will always believe that we shouldn't sell until we have better players first. If we sell Blackstock and don't bring in Lita, Evans or anyone else for that matter we are worse off.

Good stats but that shows nothing about the rest of his performance and the fact that he never creates anything on his own.

He isn't a bad striker he is limited in what he can do but he does score goals, he could get 20 a season if we played well as a team and created chances! It would also help if he had a regular strike partner something he has never really had!

Well these are my (unpopular) thoughts on this copied from another thread:

"In truth we need Dex plus another striker. Hopefully the deal will fall through and he'll stay. There's no other player at the club that can score headed goals as well as Dex. And whatever people's misgivings over his languid, awkward, lazy-looking style, he does know how to find the back of the net on a consistent basis, as proved last season under Dowie. It only went downhill for him when Sousa came in and dropped him. But until that point his stats didnt lie. It doesnt matter how poor a 'footballer' some thought of him, the fact is he scored regularly for us, and at the end of the day goals scored = points on the board."
