Didn't post last night as many of the threads just read like a group therapy session with lots of fans venting their anger. But now I'd like to share a few thoughts.
After his meeting with the board Warnock was downplaying expectations. TBH he never makes much sense in interviews and often contradicts himself several times in the space of a few minutes but in so far as you cd follow what he was saying he was talking about three or four signings and two or three of these being loans. This cd work if it is established players who are loaned with a view to a perm if we stay up, but above all we need players who will really fight for the cause. If as he seemed to suggest it wd be youngsters from big clubs who will simply be here till the end of the season, I have my doubts. Walker was obviously brilliant for us last season but he came into a winning side a division below. How is a young player going to respond when we might come in for three or four drubbings in a row and the fans are on his back?
A few people on here have said we have good players so have asked why we didn't win yesterday. Well Sunderland's team cost about £72m. They cd bring off the bench, in Gardiner, a player who cost £6m. We are actually punching massively above our weight for what we have spent: sadly Derry is now a clapped out free transfer, Bothroyd was free, Gabiddon was free, Mackie was £150,000 (I don't include Barton in that list because he came with a massive signing on fee and wages).
I'm not one of these fans who just shouts "FFS spend some money" because the Championship and even League One is littered with clubs who risked all by spending big to stay in the Prem. But in Jan we might need more investment than the board is planning.
Even Wigan appear to have a pulse. Wolves will fight for their lives. It can't be long before Blackburn replace Kean. The likes of Fulham and Sunderland won't go down. All those fans who were talking about Europe after Stoke were in cloud cuckoo land. There's no reason to throw any toys out of the pram, because the more sensible fan realised this season was always going to be about securing 17th place. But even after Jan its going to be hard pounding - particularly if we lose Tabs as seems almost certain because on current evidence he is the one player we have who has the bit of stardust and magic that you need in the Premier League.
