What did you guys think of the last world cup? If you thought the games were boring, then prepare for more of the same. That jabulani ball has been used in all the major competitions since. Europa, champions league, and euro qualifiers.
Today, adidas will be bringing out another new ball to use for the finals. And they are telling us this ball will be even faster. Neither this ball or last year's world cup one were professionally tested by clubs in competitive game situations.
Russia and Germany both used the jabulani before the world cup, but they were using it, not testing it. FIFA's ball testing in laboratories are only about the ball, shape retention etc, and not how it behaves during a game. It's basically more uncontrollable in terms of speed and bounce.
It takes players a bit longer to control it, so that's why you don't see as much first time passing as you used to. It's like playing with a rubber ball. Because it starts to bounce more, it's destroying game flow and game play.
Have you not noticed how more often now, shots on goal are flying up into the upper tiers, miles off target? Heading is more difficult now with this ball, the slightest touch and it's gone in the wrong direction. You don't see any more long through balls over the top now, as players can't catch them.
And before you say it, yes, it's the same for both teams. But it's affecting the better teams more badly, as their games depend on slick one-two's sometimes. There's more stop and start with the ball now if you notice.
Rob Green got terrible abuse last year against the USA over that goal that trickled past his fingers. Dropped from the team too, but the problem was the ball not him. Last year's ball had more speed and bounce.
This is not the same ball that we use in our league. Our league ball is stitched which allows air in and out around the bladder inside, which results in some impact power loss when struck. But this new adidas one is completely sealed and is more unpredictable when shooting.
It's called a nucklehead effect that makes it swerve badly in front of goalkeepers. Normal shot speed used to be around 35mph, now it can be 50mph. and adidas say it's the perfect ball. Huh. If it ever comes in to our league, I'm finished with football till it goes.
I didn't watch many world cup games when I saw what was happening, and I won't be bothering next year either. And I certainly wouldn't waste money going there to be bored with the games.
So just cast your mind back, or look at replays, of recent england games, europa games, champions league games, and were they generally boring? If you think they were, now you know why.
