Calling someone ginger or fat is totally different and shows complete ignorance of history. There is obvious sensitivity about skin colour stretching back centuries - ever heard of the black slave trade, or of signs that used to appear in pubs in the 1950s "no blacks, no Irish, no dogs". Until the mid seventies, when it was made illegal, black people were routinely denied jobs PURELY BECAUSE THEY WERE BLACK. In the eighties black players had bananas thrown at them. Even today there are large numbers of cases of black and asian people being beaten up and abused because of the colour of their skin. If ginger people had been similarly persecuted I'm sure there would be laws against drawing attention to the colour of their hair - but there isn't. Use your loaf, plse...
Are we to be punished for all eternity for the mistakes of our predecessors?
We have moved from those times but i do actually wonder how many of todays modern black youth actually harp on about the slave trade there ancestors had to endure? none of my black friends do,they see me for who i am and i do likewise.
the boot is firmly on the other foot now ...got lifted a few years back against Baadiff after i took exception to being called an English C*** and chinned the fella... surprisingly my plea that i was racially abused(yes i was trying it on but hey why not) did not stand up and a 3 year ban ensued
some Ginger people may well be offended by name calling but at the end of the day that is all it is NAME CALLING no persecution/slavery/discrimination involved and if the worst thing that happens to you in life is you are called a name that offends you then count your blessings

Its so easy, isn't it, after persuting a race for several hundred years to suddenly say "oh well, lets move on now and not mention it again"? My point, that a few posters seem completely incapable of grasping, is that it is
because of this history that calling someone a "black ****" is so emotive. People shouldnt go around calling each other English **** or Welsh **** either, but the offence is not anything as like as great because there just isn't the same history.

Sorry Stainrod, something is either wrong or it isn't. It isn't wrong for one and not another because history said they had a worse time.
So, Irish people could and often have pointed to persucution too - so are you saying Irish *** is also bad, but the Welsh haven't had things as bad so we can call them a welsh **** and it's ok to ignore that?
I know a black, welsh fatty - I am going to go and ask him.

Quite.
It takes a special kind of stubborn, blinkered idiocy to not understand this.

Yes it is - you said "It takes a special kind of stubborn, blinkered idiocy to not understand this". This being the viewpoint you take.
I would say that is pretty cut and dried.
In this case, if someone fails to grasp why sticking the word 'black' in front of the c-word, is worse than say 'fat' or 'Welsh' or 'ginger', is either deliberately missing the point to allow them to justify their own racist tendencies, is not particularly bright and probably not educated enough to know their history, or is being a hilarious internet WUM (which is worse than being John Terry IMO).
