I thought the move South would good for our new ‘Captain Marvel’ amongst London’s sophisti-cat’s. I thought it would present the opportunity for him prove his doubters wrong and show the world he is in fact misunderstood.
So far having observed a series of average to below par performances (didn’t see the Wolves match) and listened / read about him continuously since his signing for us I am somewhat perplex how a player can fall for their own hype as much as ‘our’ Joey.
Cast your minds back to when after a decade and a half in the wilderness Rangers put in the sort of performance which announces their return to the football world and gives real meaning to the phrase ‘Rangers are back’. So when I wake the following day to find our so called leader on the pitch decorating the back off the Sunday newspapers antagonising both the opposition fans and players grabbing all the headlines for the wrong reasons completely overshadowing this performance I become concerned.
What concerns me is to lead must be by example, but what example does Barton set? To simply state its on the pitch what matters is incorrect...its around the training ground, in the dressing room and on the pitch. To suggest what goes on off the pitch stays there is not true, players motivation, confidence and focus are affected by many factors which can affect match day performance. Barton needs to take responsibility for his actions and think about what influence and impact they have on the team/squad/club.
Barton for what it’s worth is an intelligent man lacking an enormous amount of common sense. In an environment surrounded by a lack of real education or be it a good level of intelligence; ie Professional Footballers, quoting famous philosophers or discussing politics may impress but the rest of us don't live in this world and I for one just don't get it. I remember a story about Barton mocking scouse girls for being orange and going out in their pyjama's. This for me was his way of saying "I've got style and I'm switched on", he was ridiculing where he came from basically saying "I'm better than you...I've moved on."
So excuse this complete character assassination of our new captain but I just feel the man has no style whatsoever and just comes across like a bit of a fool. Whilst there has been plenty of hot air off the pitch there has been nothing on it to justify his 80 bags a weeks. It's a famous old cliche to 'let the football do the talking', but I don't ever think there was a truer case for its use as in the case of Barton given the amount of tripe he talks off it.
I'm hoping the 6-0 drubbing by Fulham drags him down a peg or two and he starts representing this club first as a player and then as the captain. He has a wealth of Premier League experience (so I hear he likes to remind everyone) and is one of the best midfelders in the country (despite his 'omission' from the England squad).
The last paragraph brings me onto my final point. Now this is totally my own assumption but I can't help thinking players like Joey (the deluded) Barton think's that the little ole QPR fans shoud be gratful to have a player of his 'stature' at our club, so therefore he can do or say what he wants. We are after all technically the smallest club in the Premier League and we must be 'puching above our weight'. Least I remind the likes of Barton that this club has had truly world class players grace the hallowed turf in blue and white hoops through the years.
So during my lifetime I cast my mind back to the last good top level QPR side we had and I ask myself where would Barton fit in based on the present showing? and the only thing that I can think or come up with is.....
Barton….I'd rather have Simon Barker
